props to you for sticking to it, even tho most people are like "jeeze, he can't even do that simple little thing" or "RTFM". I highly recommend any of the O'Reilly (http://www.oreilly.com) books. On any subject for that matter. if you want "instant" help, the www.linux.org and www.(nameyourdistro).com has pretty good information. I've always had good results with re-compiling my kernel with Slackware
As far as windows being more intiutive for users, no contest. Developers for linux don't care about the common man, and generaly won't help them (before you flame me, make the software easy to use/install!) Generaly however, most of them do write good man pages (type man man at a command prompt in linux for help with stuff (it's man (commandname) to get the man page, not much help tho if you don't know what it's called))
Also, I learned much about linux by hanging out with linux gurus. Find someone better than you at linux, and learn from them. Watch them use it, ask for help setting up your system. Join a Linux User Group. Go bug the local high school/college. I have found that people are the best help, once they get off their high horse.
Wow, that's cool. I didn't know that Apple gave Xerox stock. I understood that Xerox (this was at the PARC center, I know it's redundant, it just sounds stupid otherwise) was letting pretty much anyone use what they made (this is comming from the biography on Steve Jobs, I forget which one)
BTW, I did not see the Pirates of Silicon Valley, I didn't want to see it because the tv-movie appeared to be inaccurate.
I'm thinking that having the original bug detection (i.e. your computer will send all data on the hard drive to a site just because you went to 127.0.0.1) be in an email, with a obvious link to updated information. And for the minor revisions (more exploits, other methods of workarounds, etc) just send the link to the page.
The release is just a ton of copyright legal text, with a link to the problem. The problem is mentioned like twice in the email or so (don't flame me if I counted wrong, that's not the bloody point). The way MS used to do it, everything you would ever want to be in a security update was in the email, and you could pass it on. Now they require you to go to the web site for details on the problem, and for any details on workarounds, fixes, and proofs of concepts. It used to be in a single email that you could archive for ever. Now its in a web page that will probably dissaper in a few months.
in my system (Windows 95 B with USB Support) it is in "c:\windows\hosts.sam" Here is the text from the default file (Notice the Chicago referance? I love them calling it by the development name!)
# Copyright (c) 1994 Microsoft Corp.

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Chicago

# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each

FYI Windows 95 is a bastardized version of Mac 7.5 (not trying to troll, just trying to point out that Microsoft did NOT invent the GUI, that was Xerox, but Apple had the first commercial one.)
10 digit dialing isn't required where I am (San Francisco Bay Area) but since I use my cell phone and my work phone, I dial all numbers as 11 digits (1-area code-then the number) because especialy on my cell, I don't know the default area code (is it the one that is on my phone (415?) or the area code that I am in (925?)? So, no matter if I am dialing a 415, 925, or 650, or whatever, I just dial 11 digits, and all of my phone numbers in the phone book feature are stored that way. Even at work, when I have to dial the numbers manualy, I just dial 11 digits by habit. (As I remember, if you dial a local number (555-1212) as 11 digits (1-415-555-1212) it's considered the same for the billing options.)
AFAIK the control strip only came turned on by default on the powerbooks (Apple's laptops). And if you couldn't figure out how to turn it off, I'm sure you figured that if you double clicked on on of the "tabs" at the end, it would minimize. In minimize form it's pretty small, and you could just go to the control strip control panel, and have it disabled.
I agree, it was pretty useless, but it was cool to play with for like 20 minutes or so (I didn't change settings after I had them set, so it wasn't useful to me, I also had shortcuts on my desktop for the apps that I used most common.) Whatever else it could do, I just used the keyboard shortcuts.
Alas, the only credentials that I have are a High School diploma. (did I say credentials, I ment credential. singlular)
As for going down the penisula, that was out of the question(no car/license) but, still, I wasn't looking for anything special, just an entry level posistion with technology. Basic tech support, and data entry, or even internships were impossible to find. (also, the only reason I got the job out in Pleasanton, is because my friend has a job with the same company, he got them to consider me, and I was able to get in.)
I live in San Francisco, and the best computing/technology job I could find (no pretty papers, but I can learn) was at RadioShack. I finaly found a MIS posision for a payroll company in Pleasanton. (for those of you who don't know the area, Pleasanton is 1 hour away on bart, in the boonies) I tried everywhere I could think of in San Francisco, posted my resume on all of the web sites that I could find. I think that the dream that silicon is in silicon valley is dying out. At least at the entry-level posistions.:'-(
I live close to the wireless part in San Francisco (Richmond district near the Presidio), but they don't tell you how far away you can be to reach their stuff. Does anyone have any info on distance, and strenght? Don't want to invest $800 if it won't work at my house.

An exhibition was opened after the completion of the development of world's first Embedded Linux smart phone. PalmPalm Technology Inc. had been engaged in a joint project with SK Telecom and Seoul National University since the beginning of this year on the development of [Linux-based CDMA/IMT-2000 smart phone]. In the upcoming exhibition, you will see SK Telecom's IMT-2000 smart phone loaded with ®Tynux, Embedded Linux operating system reengineered by PalmPalm Technology Inc.
The diverse and powerful functions of this IMT-2000 smart phone had been displayed at SK Telecom Central Research Unit in Bundang, on November 29th, in the presence of reporters covering the IT industry and other major related groups and individuals.
Besides having loaded Linux operating system, this smart phone (brand name; Palmi) that incorporates the functions of both cellular phone and PDA, also provides strong multimedia functionalities including animation, MP3, video communication, to name a few. In addition, with the help of its Bluetooth that enables high-speed wireless communication, playing network games among appliances is made possible.
Internet environment equivalent to that of desktops are also offered and its environment is especially optimal for wireless Internet appliances with its advanced resolution graphic system and low-power management functionalities.
Tynux, developed by PalmPalm Technology Inc. and released early this year, is an Embedded Linux operating system that strengthened the power & memory management as well as real time functionalities for multimedia data transactions. As such, SK Telecom's smart phone that has loaded this operating system may be the fist model to show that Linux can be the most optimized operating system for wireless Internet appliances.
While engaging in this joint development, PalmPalm Technology Inc. has also established strategic partnership with prominent application software companies worldwide. After integrating games (provided by Mdream, Korea), pen-recognition (provided by Diotek, Korea), Bluetooth (provided by Zeen, Korea), QT/Embedded (provided by Trolltech, Norway) and web browser (provided by Opera Software, Norway), PalmPalm Technology Inc. has performed performance & reliability tests before supplying the optimal programs in bundled forms.
Those related in the industry forecast that this announcement will provide an opportunity to prove that Embedded Linux is indeed the most adequate operating system for wireless Internet appliances, and will be a dividing line judging the potential success or failure of its becoming commercialized.
Although there cannot be an absolute leader in the wireless Internet appliance market, the expectation of PalmPalm Technology Inc. becoming a forerunner in setting the standards in the market is something to look forward to.

I've met many more alcoholic homeless people than sober. Maybe cause I live in San Francsico, and that's the standard here(rich bastards, some of them make $100k+ year, all tax free) but I have no compassion for them. "Gimme 5 bucks" 5 DOLLARS!?! WTF are you doing begging for 5 DOLLARS!!!! and why do you get mad when I give you a one!?!
I know a small porportion of people who use something being "gay" as it being stupid. AFAIK it has nothing to do with the sexual orintaion or happieness of said individual, or company, but just that it's stupid. I know that South Park uses that phrase that way as well. I don't believe that there was an insult to gays (I believe he would use the word "faggot" in that case)
From the movie Hackers that HMD that Zero Cool/Crash Overide (Johnny Lee Miller) had when they were in the phone booths was kick-ass. Where can I get one of those? That, a velcro-ed chord keyboard, and a ricochet modem is all i need. =)
hook it up to a laptop, or a beefed up palm, and you're good to go!
The thing is: Here at Slashdot, we have a time travelling machine. We got your two messages, then went back a few days, and gave credit to other people for it. Sorry about the mix-up, but we discovered that if you give someone credit for something they havn't yet done, they tend to be very "weirded out". Thank you and have a great day!
My bad, i have a bad memory (this info is like 5+ years old, and being that i'm only 20, that's a substantial portion of my life)
the cool thing about rhapsody, is that you could use the yellow box to create rhapsody programs for windows95, etc, without having to do a re-compile, or get an actual wintel machine to do the devel, and testing. This also allowed for 90-95% same code for the mac and the window app (just change some of the front end, but i think that is redundant, just write the code in ansi compliant c or whathaveyou)
Link from MacUser (http://macuser.zdnet.com/mu_0897/startup/rhapsody .html) (God rests it's pages)
Wait a gosh durn minute here....I believe that is one of the major points of OSX. Support for Wintel applications natively. IIRC that is the yellow box (Alas, no source code, however it is an intrigal part of the OS, so it will be pretty well supported). OSX (as much as i want it to be on intel chips) is pretty much designed for PPC, being the blue box (Apple) and yellow box (wintel) compatiblilty. Altho, the BSD based kernel is sweet, and I figure that would allow for almost instantainous linux/bsd/gnu compatiblity (just need to re-compile, or even just run the prog)
332 bits? I hope that is a typo, otherwise, i'll be going apeshit for an old 386 processor (16 mhz? so what, it'll process one-hell-of-a-lot-faster than your crappy PIII
perhaps? we already have a cute litte mascot, and depending on your mental state, he already talks!

This isn't flamebait, this is a cut and paste of the article. Redundant, maybe, but flamebait it is not!
