  1. Re:Maybe not the most thorough approach... on Fixing Wireless Security By Pulling The Plug · · Score: 2, Informative

Being the person who submitted this story, what i meant by "maybe not the most thorough" is that, if that information was so "easily" obtained wirelessly, then its probably not extremely secure on wire either, and they need to have better policies in place, but at least this is an intelligent start.

  2. Unfortunately on Stevie Wonder to Implant Eye Chip? · · Score: 1

A great procedure that I am sure, although apparently attempted on 15 other people. (and I am not sure about the success rate). I heard that Stevie Wonder's sight was tooo far damaged for this procedure... unfortunate for him.

  3. Excellent on Checkpoint Porting Firewall-1 to Linux · · Score: 1

This is excellent, I work with Checkpoint Firewalls, and this proves to be a very good things for a number of reasons. Currently we have our firewalls deployed on Sun hardware (and solaris of course). But one of the reasons I do not like our solution is that I am not as familiar with debugging the OS issues of solaris. With a Linux port of CheckPoint, that means cheaper solutions (for those sites with minimal traffic) and still inter-operability with the current production firewalls. (For me) it would also offer more of a comfort level with the hardware/OS, in terms of tracking down problems.

  4. Re:Cell phones may also cause brain tumors in peop on Linkage between Cell-phone Usage and Long Term Memory Loss · · Score: 1

My understanding of the research done on this is as follows. Out of the sample questioned, there was no direct corrolation to the percentage of people who used cell phones to the people that had brain tumors. That being said though, out of those who had brain tumors and who did use cell phones, there was a corrolation as to where the tumor formed, and which side of head the tumour formed on, and which ear the person generally use to talk on their cell phone. Unfortunately I dont have a link to this, but this was my understanding of the recent research that was done.

  5. Perhaps... on Linkage between Cell-phone Usage and Long Term Memory Loss · · Score: 1

Well, as others have said... I am skeptical on listening to medical health news from Wired. But there has been a lot of talk about the possible links to cell phones and brain tumors, and now also to memory loss?... Well being in the IT industry, and constantly using my cell phone for work, as well as my personal cell phone... for everything else, this does worry me a little... Well my solution, although pretty simple, hadn't dawned on me until recently is to use one of those hands free (generally used in the car) sets for the cell phone. No matter how you look at it you are going to be exposed to some of the 'radiation' but with the hands free set/ear piece, at least that amount can be reduced especially around the head and brain, where it seems to be causing the most concern. Probably no new information for most of you, but I thought I would share.

  6. BSDs on Which BSD? · · Score: 1

Not to long ago I was in much the same position as yourself. There has been quite a bit said already, personally I am using FBSD for my servers and OBSD for the firewall/router. I would use NetBSD if I had some (more) obscure hardware other than x86. Well nevertheless, here is a url that I have found to have good links, and some up to the minute BSD news. Daemon News. Now all will be great if slashdot keeps up with the BSD news as much as the Linux stuff.

If it came across that I was agreeing, I was not. My point was that if they (turbo linux) were sharing the view points of the analysts, in that they feared there may be a fork... then they should have submitted their changes to Linus first. But yes... I agree with you, that is the whole idea of GNU. So again, I say good job, and good luck to them.

  11. Re:The review says... on ServerWatch review of FreeBSD · · Score: 1

When I read this, I thought the same thing. My guess is that they are classifying it as a con because of the fact that the less restrictive nature can "hurt" the community. This because of the way the BSD license works, and the stipulations about redistributing and relicensing. Personally, I do not agree. Nevertheless, this is not intended to start any arguments over different licensing, just my thoughts on where the article was coming from.

  12. Re:What about *new* musical styles? on Simulating Human Musical Performance · · Score: 1

Its the people who will program the machines to spit out the music, who will be the musicians of the future. It is obvious to me that music made by "traditional" instruments will never go away, but computer generated stuff will only grow as well. Just take a look at a lot of the newer Techo, Industrial and Synthpop. They already have some computer programs that will emulate these synthesizers perfectly, so why would one want to dump the enormous amounts of money into the units, when once can get a soft synth for a fraction of the price.
