  1. Fig Leaf on Supreme Court Rules against Grokster · · Score: 0, Redundant

    So if you

    1. create something that is 99% of the time used for illegal purposes
    2. knowing this, still distribute it, and
    3. continue to promote its use
then you can be held liable for the resulting crimes. The fact that 1% of the users don't break the law does provides no cover. Sounds good to me.

It would be nice if they applied this same logic to the sale of cheap handguns.

Yahoo and Microsoft will one day merge. They have the same attitude toward customers.

  4. Re:9th most popular web site on BBC News Under The Bonnet · · Score: 1
BBC is the 23rd most popular web site. The fact that they are running Apache is obvious and public, as is the fact that they have a bunch of coding errors in their home page.

With Firefox, the developer toolbar and Quirk SearchStatus, and you can learn all these things yourself.

  5. Wireless BroadBand on Cell Phone Service as High Speed Internet Link? · · Score: 1

Last summer I borrowed a wireless CDMA card from my buddy and used it successfully on Block Island. We had a clear view of the cell tower half a mile away. I mated my wife's computer to mine with a crossover cable, and we both had great speed.

In February I ordered my own card, and tried to use it at customer sites in the Greater Hartford area (self-reliance). Not in the boonies, just in Manchester, CT and other densely populated suburbs. Unless you can see a cell tower from where you sit, forget it. At home I have four bars, and no cellular broadband. The card went back to Verizon.

  6. VoIP not a replacement for POTS on FCC to Push VoIP 911 Requirements · · Score: 1

We're all adults. If you want to be able to call 911, then keep your POTS line with minimal service. Install VoIP on line 2 of a two-line phone. Calling your girlfriend in Spain? Select line 2 and call for free. Accidentally dismember yourself? No worries. Just pick up and dial 911 on the default (line 1). CORDLESS PHONES are more dangerous than VoIP. Next time you're bleeding to death, see if you can find the handset!
