Well, I like George R.R. Martin for all of his books, the jokers series, his vampire book, and his current series "A Song of Fire and Ice." I do like him a lot. A thousand words wouldn't suffice.
As for Robin Hobb, any of hers is highly recommended. Her writing is less intense than Martin's, but then good ending is a requirement for US readers.
