  1. taxes were paid on Microsoft and Cisco Don't Pay Taxes? · · Score: 4
the employees who exercised their options paid taxes, either through AMT, capital gains, or income tax. So, in theory, the government got something from the company's owners.

yes, it is a loophole, but it is not like the money completely disappeared.

  2. Olympic coverage *will* be on the net, sort of on The Web And The Olympics · · Score: 1

IOC has given permission to NBCOlympics to use Axient to publish 1-day delay clips on the net, up to 30 minutes per day, because Axient can limit access to subscribers in North America only. If this works, we'll most likely see more in the future. The first step is to work within the rules. (disclaimer: I work for a company that provides software to build Axient's content distribution and delivery infrastructure)

try this for a view of the same article without the weird font.

  4. Re:Codecs are the sticking point on Open Source Video Streaming Needed · · Score: 1

Real uses rtsp, but not rtp. They use a proprietary protocol to transfer stream data from the server to the client.

The internet does have the potential to alter this status quo, through pirated rebroadcasts, but only in a distant future (let us say one decade) in which the typical internet-enabled household can boast broadband speeds
It could be sooner than that. Think reverse-proxies (aka reflectors). Streaming media is the current "hot" thing, not the next one.
  6. Re:Hypotheses on A Post-Columbine Halloween Horror Story · · Score: 1

According to the AP story in the SF Chronicle,

    1) the kids were asked to write a scary story about being home alone and hearing noises.

    2) the kid has been a "disciplinary problem" for a while.

    3) the essays were not graded

    IMHO:
Sounds like a jerk of a kid trying to cause trouble.

Did he deserve to be put in jail? Not based on this one incident.

  7. Re:Analysis on Cobalt Public Date Announced · · Score: 2

I just "ported" a product to the new Cobalt x86-based system (it's basically RedHat 6.0), and it was very little effort for (what we hope will be) quite a big payoff. The biggest premium in the ISP/NSP world is rack space, and the prospect of having umpteen-gazillion servers in such a confined space is a great idea.

There are some cool technical folks working at Cobalt, and I hope they do well.

  8. But are they standards-based? on The Who's Reunion Concert to be Webcast Live! · · Score: 2

I'd guess not. There are standards-based (RTSP and RTP/RTCP) servers available (PRISS, Darwin, and ELSA, for example - see streamingserver.org for more info), and clients in the works for Linux (I hope Sun is working on a RTSP layer for JMF; likewise, I hope Apple is porting Quicktime Client too). I'd bet that in a year's time, streaming multimedia will be the norm for all platforms, and companies like pixelon will stand out from the background noise only if they have something more than a window-only, single-media-source solution.
