The DS has two cartridge ports for potential storage, Wifi, and the bottom screen could serve as a soft keyboard. The DS has enough CPU power, but is kinda low on RAM. Still, if this was developed enough, it'd be a decent and inexpensive Linux machine with a lot of possibilities.
I found the control in Mario 64 DS to be aggravating without a solid analog controller. I think the DS's greatest strength is the ability to play the full GBA library, which in my opinion currently has the greatest number of good games for any portable gaming system.
Actually I think the RPG for it (Untold Legends) works really well as a pickup, play, put down game. It's very Diabloesque and the PSP's excellent sleep function (along with save-anywhere in the game, PC style) makes it very portable. It's not too "deep" or involved. I've had a lot of fun with it, even though it is kind of a rushed launch title.
