  1. Re:Don't be stupid, go to Community College ... on Top University Rankings for 2004 Released · · Score: 2, Interesting

Although an undergraduate degree may not get you the farthest as far as your career is concerned, the instruction you get while earning one could potentially make or break your chances at having an illustrious career. Also getting your education at an accredited school can boost your chances of getting into a good graduate program. Sure the community college can save you a ton of money, but depending on the worth of their instruction you could wind up regretting it later.

  2. Well no wonder! on Linux will have 20% desktop market share by 2008? · · Score: 2, Insightful

....[McNutt] believes that the Ximian desktop and application suite, running on either SuSE or Red Hat, requires two days of training, which is the same as what most enterprises budget for a Windows/MS Office version upgrade.

Now I know why people call in to tech support with such rediculous problems. Perhaps M$ apps could be made more useful if the people that relied on them were better trained in the techniques of using a windows system.

So what will happen if businesses were to migrate to a linux platform that's completely different from windows? Would the average desktop user really be able to pick up the necessary skills to use linux effectively in a matter of a couple of days?

I have a feeling that insufficient knowledge and interest in learning a new system is the reason that linux hasn't already claimed a larger share of the desktop market.

Before you can have a smarter desktop, you need to make smarter users.

  3. An actual idea on Cleaning Your Mice Wheels? · · Score: 3, Informative

As a technican at a university I often find peripherals in various states of soiledness. All jokes posted in these replies aside, this is a very simple matter to deal with.

I usually use isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs to clean off dirty peripherals. This not only cleans the equipment very well, but gives the room an aroma that suggests you might be doing something important.

Rotating the swab while running it perpendicular to the mouse wheel seems to work best. Get a different swab often, however, or you'll just wind up depositing more gunk back on the wheel.

    Hope this helps!

  4. Colleges can still take some action.... on Higher Education Committee Releases Report on P2P · · Score: 1

Despite the fact that these decisions state that universities won't be held accountable for student's actions, I see no reason for them to completely stop making the effort.

First of all, there is a lot of fine software out there that can filter out commonly used P2P ports on a network. The general music sharing community is unaware of methods to circumvent these network filters, and so that could make a large dent in the amount of online file sharing without a lot of specific work. This would not only be a help to the music industry, but could save the colleges a good deal of money on bandwidth.

I'm not sure about other carriers, but I know that my university pays quite a bit for outgoing web traffic. Taking some fairly simple measures could help save a bundle on internet connections.

A small effort from everyone involved could have large payoffs for a lot of people.

  5. Attention.... what? on Surviving Slashdotting with a Small Server · · Score: 1

    Observation:

I barely even made it to the end of this article, and then this crack about slashdotter's attention span actually caught my attention.

Why do we glaze over things so often? There are several possibilities.

1)Some people will only read information, even when it is about interesting material, if it pertains directly to them. In this instance, someone who doesn't do anything with web hosting might not see it as relevant to them - I think it's interesting, and I don't run any webserers, but....

2)There is so much information being provided to us in so many different formats every day that we can't help but skim through things a bit sometimes. If we were to take time to read into every interesting tidbit of info that passed our eyes every day we'd either be glued to a computer (or newspaper, or what have you) or go crazy. I've already gone crazy, but there's still hope for most of you out there!

  6. Get what's useful now on DVD Players - Buy Now or Wait for the Violet Laser Models? · · Score: 1

With how common current red laser DVD systems have become, the technology has dropped in cost dramatically. Walmart even has an Emerson DVD Player for only 60 bucks.

Even Though violet laser DVD systems are on the market now, it will be some time before their cost comes down, and it will be almost as long before we start seeing DVDs out on the market that would take advantage of this feature. It seems to me that if you want to see DVDs that the $60 or so for a DVD player now could be worth it, depending on how much you have to spend. Then when violet laser system prices come down and DVDs for them are available, you can get one of those. THere will still be pleny of regular DVDs around, so the red laser unit won't go to waste for a long time.

  7. Go with the best on Deciding Between SCO and Linux? · · Score: 1

Although it may be a pain to move to a linux platform as opposed to the SCO server, there could be many benefits. Linux being faster at processing requests is the most obvious of course, but at least you know that Linux will be supported for a long time to come. Support for distributions of SCO linux, as with microsoft products, is subject to the state of the company. If IBM manages to take SCO down in the legal battles, who will be there to support your software?

Since you need to do some sort of upgrade anyway, it'd likely be a good move to take advantage of the moment to make the most of your server.

Good luck with whatever you wind up doing.
