And furthermore, TR's reviews are witty, clever, and worth reading beginning to end. Why do so many hardware review sites read like an industry press release or use the same tired analogies and figures of speech? Tech Report's writers actually know how to write, not just run benchmarks and post the results.
I don't understand what about the writeup is trolling? Too much blame on the manufacturer and not enough on the masses? One effective method of getting people's attention is to sound like you're taking the side of the masses, against "the corporation."
The main goal of an article like this is to educate the consumer. Lots of us may not have known how much performance we sacrifice by buying a laptop with a crappy HDD. You wisely point out that most people have no idea how to intelligently compare these things. This review aims at rectifying this problem... and introducing it this way got people's attention, without misrepresenting the content.
Yes, several manufacturers now offer better drives in their base- or mid-level machines, but there are more than a few laptops out there whose owners are considering tossing them in favor of something newer, faster, better... when one upgrade may give them the performance they seek.
CompTIA Survey indicates your experience is par for the course. 85% of IT professionals decide for themselves what training or education they get. I suppose there's good and bad in this -- at least they're not being forced to go to unneeded training, as workers in many other fields do.
