Interesting comment... I do think it's possible to be addicted but just because you talk to people online a lot, is that really any less real than inviting people to your house all the time?

    • I agree, OmniWeb is great. Mozilla is also nice and fast, although it does have some strange bugs.
    • I left my iMac on for a week straight without restarting. Could never have done that in OS 9 unless it was sitting there unused.
    • Other OS's seem fast when you use them, but when you go back to OS X you just don't care... hard to explain, but it's so nice that the reduced speed is acceptable. (Been using is 99% of the time since March 24th).
    • IE 5 is weird... is messed up my post so I'm doing it in Mozilla now.
    • Did you notice that minimized terminal windows are updated in the dock? Run the Darwin version of SETI@home with the verbose flag, with magnification turned up on the dock, and you'll see what I mean.
    • Can't wait till they have a version of this that is fast.

I have an iMac DV. Haven't needed USB storage but I did have problems getting the video settings to work right (including on the 2000 Q4 update.) I'd get something like 256 colors even when I had it set to do thousands or millions. I decided to try YellowDog Linux instead and it worked fine on the first try. Also, Ethernet didn't work right on LinuxPPC (maybe that issue was a problem with the user, not the computer... ;) but, like the video issue, worked great the on the first try with YellowDog.

I believe that Darwin supports Mac OS Extended (HFS+), UFS, and probably Mac OS Standard (HFS). LinuxPPC 2000 does not support it but perhaps the upcoming update (LinuxPPC Q4) will.

No, there was no 97 or 2000 for Mac. The "first" arguement doesn't work anymore for a specific version because in a given year, there's isn't both new a Mac and Windows version of Office. This is much like IE and OE too. On Mac they are still at version 5, but IE and OE on Mac are pretty much independent of the same programs on Mac. (5 on Mac and 5 on Windows are not supposed to be the same.

  6. Zip & DVD-RAM (Re:Expansion|Floppy Drive) on Apple announces the G4 · · Score: 1

Some models (or a custom-built machine, if you choose that option) can have DVD-RAM and/or a Zip drive.
I'm sure you've heard this before, but in today's world floppies are not very useful - they're slow and small. They seem insufficient even on this old 33MHz Mac I'm using with a 250meg (yes, 250meg) hard disk. Many files you'll find on the internet are far larger than a floppy anyway, so it is much easier to transfer files over my LAN than to put them on a disk.

Right. Mac OS X, I've read, is completely PPC native. Minor correction though:
There was still 68k code in 8/8.1, because Mac OS 8.1 does work on 68040 and 68LC040 based Macs. (I'm writing this message on a Performa 630 [a 68LC040 machine] running Mac OS 8.1.)

Don't be so sure... Mac OS X (yet to be released) and Mac OS X Server (already shipping), as well as Darwin OS (the open source basis of OS X) are based on BSD Unix, which would most likely make it very easy to port it. I have read that some Unix programs could even be run under OS X with a simple recompile. So if they did it under Mac OS X Server or Darwin OS, it would have been possible for them to use those tests.
