    To be fair, the blowout preventer on the wellhead is meant to be failure proof (or at least a graceful failure scenario). The blowout preventer failing entirely is unheard of in the oil industry.

    Don't discount CentOS. My organization just did some consulting work with a Fortune 500 company that has several thousand CentOS boxes. They just couldn't justify the cost to run RHEL when they had enough in-house talent to fix problems when they came up (it being open source and all).

    The Deepwater Horizon rig that recently exploded/sank was 40 miles off the coast of LA and is at a depth of 5000'. Interesting to hear that most of the water is shallow near the TX coast.

    You joke, but I can't remember the last time I used my printer. Hell, I got a Gap coupon the other day via email and before I printed it out, I noticed it said I could just show the barcode to the cashier using my phone. When my laser printer dies, I'm done with paper.

    HAH! One of our clients did this to have functionality added to their highly trafficked Wordpress site (paid $75). Changes made broke the site and we're killing it during their radio shows. We charged time and materials to rip the offending code out and write it properly. I encourage others to try Rent A Coder/Freelancer/etc first. =)

    I buy several Gb/s from Cogent at three POPs in the US and two in Europe. You can indeed get it for $1USD/Mb (or cheaper, depending on your rep).

    Any ISP connection over 100Mb/s is going to need a gigabit connection.

    Package it as a product that detectives could use with their cases, have it tie into a database warehouse/backend with existing data. Sometimes a bit of data visualization goes a long way.

    Since a PS3 is mostly worthless without network access, this is a pretty effective strategy to get their way.

    Incorrect. I purchased my PS3 to be used as a media streaming/blu-ray player/netflix streaming player. I've never gamed on it once, and I could care less if Sony bans me from PSN. I'd argue that there are others who are doing the same.

    You could do it with all robots but you still can't repair and maintain them, so someone is going to be out there.

    You just send more robots or remote presence systems. It'll *always* be cheaper than sending an actual person there.
