If it weren't for the shoddy products released by Microsoft and the people that abuse the holes in those products, I wouldn't be able to put food on my table. I never get upset when a new virus/worm or security hole is found in Windows or Outlook. To me its a happy day because I get to hear my favorite sound, "Cha-Ching!".
The last thing in the world I want is Linux/BSD/Mac OS to become the mainstream operating system of choice. With Microsoft ruling the roost, I will never be poor. Instead of punishing these virus/worm writers and the script kiddies, I would like to erect a monument to praise their work. Without them, I would be destitute.
1)Like I said, there are no new apps out that are not crash test dummy betas. You backed up my point, thanks. Preview releases and promises of future releases don't cut it after MacWorld SF. Jobs said, "MWNYC will be the Mac OS X app show". Well if you count Betas as release software, I guess you have a point
2) Try to go to the Apple Store, order a new PowerMac G4 and have it delivered this month. Ain't gonna happen. As for iMacs, Apple is shooting itself in the foot for bumping the price up. One expects a speed bumped machine to be the same price as last year's model. That has been the model since the first iMac.
3) As much as I would like to think the short pipeline in my Dual 500 G4 makes my machine fast, outside of Photoshop and Media Cleaner Pro, I do not feel like I am driving a HotRod compared to a 1Ghz+ x86 box.
Weren't Mac Users supposed to get the GeForce3 cards by now? Even with a GeForce2, Macs are getting smoked by the video card offerings available to our mortal enemies, x86 users.:) My rant was more about the quality of optimization of software for x86 vs. G4. The OS X Quake 3 lags behind in quality versus the Windows/Linux x86 versions.
Using Photoshop and Media Cleaner Pro! That is the only reason that the G4 was faster than the Intel 1.8Ghz machine. Put linux on both and compile a kernel and lets see who is faster. Another good example is Quake 3. Think the top of the line Mac is going to have better FPS than a top of the line Intel-based box? Don't think so. Like I said, I love Apple but this Mhz doesn't matter propaganda is really tiring. I want machines that beat Intels at almost all tasks not just applying filters in Photoshop.
Puma does look awesome but I have been waiting since Copland (i.e., 3+ years) was announced for a Modern OS on a Mac. So I have been pretty freakin' patient! So far I have been disappointed with speed issues regarding Mac OS X. I have adopted it as my main desktop OS mainly to have UNIX+Mac in one box instead of running a Mac and an OpenBSD x86 box.
I am not asking much in the Mhz arena. I just want a 1Ghz Mac. 1Ghz x86 machines have been out for over a year (At least). Shouldn't take this long for Motorola and Apple to catch up. Unless you are using Photoshop or Media Cleaner Pro, the Mac speed advantage just isn't there. Compare a 1.5Ghz PC ripping Mp3s off a CD vs. a 733Mhz G4.
I hope, like you, that Sept cures my frustration with Apple. I just really think Jobs dropped the ball at this MacWorld.
Guess you didn't know that the founders of the UN were communists including the notorious traitor and communist, Alger Hiss.
Tin foil hats are perfect headgear for those that believe the sky is falling. But like I said in my previous post, Who are these "vast majority of scientists"? They are always touted but never known by name. Your are right, go home, nothing more to be seen about Global Warming. By the way, where is the Ice Age that was predicted in the 70s by the same groups of Chicken Littles that are now promoting Global Warming?
I think you might do well to visit Junk Science and re-educate your Hollywood polluted mind.
You can take the tinfoil off your head, the Bush Administration and "Big Business" does not have "mind control" beams aimed at you and we are not in a "Dr. Evil" plot to kill off all life on the planet -- Mother Nature will do that for us. Frankly, the Bush Administration appeared to cave in from the overwhelming bitching from the socialist Hollywood left flooding the nation's airwaves with whining environmentalist (i.e., Chicken Littles) to kill the issue. A smart way to "shut up" the opposition until they fade away and deal with the real business of the country -- putting more of my money back in my pocket instead of the pet projects of the socialists.
The fact that UN says there is Global Warming does not mean there is. The UN is a very socialist/anti-capitalist organization. The UN is so far off in la-la land that it voted the USA off the human rights commission and replaced it with Sudan! Do you think that Sudan pays more attention to the civil rights of its citizens more than the US? I think you better open your eyes to the organization that thinks slavery in Sudan is a much better state of human rights than freedom in the US of A. Their credibility is suspect at best.
And who are these vast majority of scientists? Sting and Leonardo DiCaprio? The only folks I ever hear talking about Global Warming are rock stars and actors -- they might play a scientist on TV but they ain't one in real life. Also what kind of scientist are they? Just because people calls themselves "scientists" doesn't mean they know anything about Future Weather Prediction. The most telling point about these "scientists" is that they are relating to me that earth is going to boil away in 50 years, but, for some reason, can't get next week's weather prediction right.
As for business, it would absolutely stupid for a business to desire the destruction of the world's ecosystems. If the ecosystem is destroyed, people will die and there will not be anyone to buy products or services. That ain't too good for profit margin if you ask me. If you want to talk about environmental disasters, look at the former Eastern Block where communism raped the environment. It wasn't big business that did that.
By the way, what you believe to be Global Warming will end naturally in 20 years.
Says the moron who feels the need to capitalise the last three letters in the word democrat in an oh-so-amusing way.
Does somebody need their Kotex changed? How about grow some testies and quit hiding behind AC. Just because your fellow comrades cannot figure out what an arrow on a voting ballot means, is no reason to inflict your PMS on us...
That shows what:
1) his promises are worth
Well so far Bush has keep everyone of his campaign promises that matter. Since I am filthy rich (according democRATs that's anyone who makes more than minimum wage), I got my tax cut. He is also pushing through other items he promised such as a patient bill of rights (not the lawyer bill of rights the democRATs are pushing) and finally an education bill that holds the teacher's union feet to the flames so our kids might actually learn the three Rs instead of sex, sensitivity training & environmental Captain Planet crap.
If you are really worried about CO2 emissions, please do us all a favor and stop breathing. The world already has a surplus of whiney, bitchey little men.
How can these "Rocket Scientists" predict how the weather in 50 years will be if the wackey and zaney weather guy on my local TV station using Doppler Google Vision Weather Radar backed with Nexrad Super Infrared X-Ray Cloud Popper can't predict next week's weather accurately?
The problem with the whole Global Warming debate is most people can only tell you there is Global Warming because some actor or rock star told them there was. The general public couldn't name one scientist that has proven that Global Warming exists but because Ted Danson and his toupee said there is Global Warming, there must be. Its a sad statement of our culture. As long as you are popular, rich, beautiful and have the right press agents, you can push any sort of BS on the American public -- shades of the 1930s in Germany.
I am actually more worried about Global Cooling. NYC has been so cold this summer! We have only broken 90 once -- it was 62 F last night! We are due for a nice little ice age any day now (geologically speaking) and all this effort to prevent greenhouse gases might just help mother nature take us there sooner.
I think its about time someone took the time to port the Linux kernel to a platform that is favored by Men with Big Penises (MwBP). For so long, MwBP have had to deal with the deal with the same distro of GNU/Linux used by Men with Small Penises (MwSP). How fair is that? Have you ever tried to grep in a MwSP distro of GNU/Linux and felt it didn't measure up? I have. You end up feeling cut off before you achieve full penetration.
According to South Park, a majority of Linux Distro's have been focused towards Japanese men. Instead of Blame Canada, it should be Blame Japan!
Just say no to Linux Distros for Men with Small Penises!!!
Does Vice President Al Gore have an unfair advantage in the online campaign of the presidency since he invented the Internet? Will the FEC step in to level the playing field for G.W. Bush so he can compete online against Al Gore?
Granted I love Apple news, but is it me or has ever since VA Linux bought Slashdot via Andover.Net, Apple news has been showing up on Slashdot almost daily? I used to remember the sniggles and jokes thrown at Apple before the buyout. But now it almost appears that Slashdot is as pro-Apple as it is pro-Linux. It might be that CmrTaco and crew have gotten past the one button mouse thingy that appears to confuse most Windows/Linux users.
The worthless UI of a Mac is a 1/2 ass clone of the early Windows interface, as everyone knows.
Did your mother smoke crack while she was pregnant with you? Everyone knows that Microsoft came up with the idea of the Windows interface after getting a demo of the MacOS from an early Lisa -- the grandmother of the Macintosh. And, of course, Steve Jobs got the idea after Xerox invested in Apple and gave Jobs a tour of Palo Alto labs.
Look before you leap! Check this out for Apache for Mac.
In fact, I can run about every net service that a Linux box can on MacOS 9. I have even written a Telnet server for mac that makes the machine appear to Un*x-like when a user connects.
P.S. If you can't find Mac Software, just head over to Download Dot Com and search. It shouldn't take long to find what you want.
This makes absolute sense to me. While Linux is a superior OS for serving files, if you want to get something done in the real world like graphics, word processing, e-mail, web, etc., MacOS beats Linux hands down for the Joe Average User. But then again, Mac has the advantage of 16 years worth of applications behind it and a dedicated and well paid group of programmers that ensure its ease of use.
I have tried all the Linux applications that mirror what I use on my Mac and frankly they are piss poor in comparision. GIMP is no Photoshop. AbiWord is no Microsoft Word. Netscape Linux blows compared to Netscape Mac. I have yet to find a comparable Linux application better than a Mac equivalent so far (suggestions would be appreciated). So I have settled on using Linux as my ServerOS of choice and MacOS as my ApplicationOS of choice.
Ever since Sherlock has been added to the MacOS (I think in 8.5), ads have always been a part of the program. This only occurs when you search internet sites and not your hard drive. I think they did this to smove out ruffled feathers of search engine companies that would complain that Apple was stealing their advertising revenue by allowing the user to bypass their WWW search page and banner ads. When you set up a sherlock search plug-in, you can set up the ad banner as well. However, if you hack the plug-in, you can remove the ad tags.
Is it me or are the postings in Slashdot an hour behind when labeled? I am in EST and I have noticed that Slashdot reports my postings as an hour behind my time even though they are tagged with EST.
I remember the time when I was pumped up about Be when it was running on PPC hardware and it looked like Apple was going to purchase them. But I am now glad that Apple bought Steve Jobs and as a bonus in the deal, Apple picked a rock solid OS, NeXT.
This has nothing to do with the number of apps, but, rather the number of useful apps.
You mean Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Quark, Flash 4, BBEdit, Netscape Communicator, Internet Explorer 5.0, QuickTime Player, etc.,etc. are not useful applications? Be wishes it had just a sprinkling of those applications to boast upon.
And seeing how Mac OS X won't be out till next year, none of the apps that can run on it are useful to *anyone* except the developers at the moment.
True, but you could use the current MacOS 9.04. to run all those and STILL have more useful apps than BeOS.
You might want to head over to Apple and check out the 200+ developers that are already porting apps to MacOS X. But even if these guys did not exist, MacOS X will be able to run 99% of all previous MacOS applications in what is called the "Classic" environment. So stating that Be has more apps than an Alpha Version of MacOS X is just plain wrong. BeOS is no where close to the number of apps that MacOS X can run even though MacOS X has not been released to the general public.
Yes and no. It appears that Apple will/has open sourced some of MacOS Xc. Currently, Apple has released the core of MacOS, Darwin, to the public. I doubt that Apple is going to open up the source to Aqua, Quartz, QuickTime and the other high level components to the general public. I think some of the reasoning behind this is that they are licensing code from other companies to build these high level compenents of MacOS X. Thus would not have the right to release the source code.
Plus, Apple is a for profit company that produces hardware and software. I doubt they are just going to give away their cool tech. So if you hate closed source, stick with Linux. I will be happy to run MacOS X on a 4MP G4. If its cool, powerful and easy to use, who cares whether its open or closed source. I just use what gets the job done, period.
Uh, excuse me, but Aqua is just the user experience. Aqua is a part of MacOS X. These screenshots are from MacOS X DP4 -- meaning Macintosh Operating System Ten Developer Preview Four. MacOS X DP4 has more enhancements than just Aqua. Many of the various parts of the operating system have been updated and about 95% of the APIs are now complete. This is a HUGE leap from DP3.
Yeah, to bad they pissed it all away with that shitty new interface.
Well, if you are calling an Alpha version of an interface "shitty" you might be right but I find it ironic that Aqua-like themes have been the top downloads over at themes.org. Its amazing how many Intel/Linux users are choosing a copy of Apple's alpha version of Aqua as their visual interface of the desktop.
