Probably a good idea considering the 2,000 trolls that unfortunitly have begun to represent the entire Linux community in showing that any Anti-MS talk is considered good, FUD or not.

I don't understand why people only think Microsoft and its employees are in the game for the money. Microsoft pays considerably less then most other tech/software companies out there. On top of that the days of making mega-bucks off the stock market are pretty much over for anybody working at Microsoft unless they started in the early to middle 90's. Beyond that though the people who work in the OS divisions and on other products there are just as dedicated and brilliant as ANY Open Source/Linux/Etc. developer working now.

You need to learn to be less caught up in yourself and what you think is your movement and open your eyes to the world around you. Linux and the OSS movement are not godsends to the industry, but I think great idea's that still have a LONG way to go.

Jesus christ I cant belive the ego with most of you. Do you think a bunch of FOX exec's sat around one day and said "Ohh lets SCREW the linux crowd."..

Hell maybe it was even a product of the evil empire. I bet that there was a special team form Microsoft that came down there and said "Dont allow linux users to view your site or.. or.. or.. we will do bad things to you!".

    My god grow up.

I agree with the previous poster. This had nothing what so ever to do with Linux, OSS, or really any software brand at all. In fact the only reason Linux was mentioned was because it was in the name of the company!

If the name of the company was "Bob's" software would it still have been posted on /.? A slow day or what?

So would you be happier if they used Linux to do this? What if anything in the world does it matter what software platform they choose to store the information on? I don't see how that is relevant to anything that is going on here.

I agree. Regardless of what SUN tries to show the OSS/*nix community via fake(read: ploy to blind you for a sec) OSS licenses or whatever else, SUN is only out to make money just like Microsoft or any other vendor out there(including Redhat).

Regardless of what people here think, ultimately somebody is always going to try and take the idea and run with it to make money. While they are running do you think they are going to look back and care about OSS? Hell no. They are going to run straight ahead and try and bully/push away anything in their path(this includes USING OSS and the community to get there). Welcome to the business world (something I personally think that the /. community needs to be slapped with).

I agree.. I want to know how much of this is pure marketing tactics or if they actually care about OSS. Somehow I tend to lean towards this is just corporate marketing taking over..

The bigger questions could also be do people on /. really even care?

I find it hard to believe a large company like sun is doing this out of the goodness of their hearts or for the "betterment" of the industry.

  10. Re:Minimalistic on How do you Define "Operating System"? · · Score: 1
I think that may have been true a couple years ago. Now though I think operating system has taken on a new name with the demands that people want. Operating systems for most people is something that needs to provide basic functionality for the masses and not just the bare minimum. People want an OS to include a basic text editor. A basic networking system tied in with it. Etc, Etc, ETc....

And while I'm sure many here on /. will debate the semantics of it till the nth degree, it still doesn't change the fact. OS is just another general computer term that changes meaning based on where it is being used and who your target audience is.

It is 3am and I realllly need to get some sleep so I'm sure somebody can define this better.. But for me a OS is something that provides a core set of functions and applications that are defined by the market. Ask yourself this. When people order the Linux OS on their new Compaq computer system, what is that "OS" going to include?
