The key to that whole statement is the phrase "sell it" Microsoft's marketing department is obviously superior to anything an open source company and conjure. It doesn't matter that MS is emulating KDE. The fact is that Microsoft is first to market and until open source MARKETING catches up, there's no way that Linux can gain market share in the personal computing environment.
Politicians and selfish, unresponsible parents are both doing the same thing as most groups faced with a large problem.
Upon trying to find a solution for said large problem, they fix something completely unrelated.
Nowadays parents care less and less about their children and worry more about their own sorry asses. Proper parenting would solve 90% of all agression and violence issues. I've been playing video games for years and I played high school football from 7 - 12 grade, and haven't killed anyone....yet. Time for lousy parents to step up and be..well.. parents.
I can't believe how outraged everyone is that the US military is employing this device. It's really only the next logical step in non-lethal weapons research and deployment.
Non-lethal has gone from teargas to beanbag guns to highly directional sound. What is so suprising that heat was used next.
Another thing I noticed is that everyone is so upset that people would be harmed because of glasses or metal on their person. You seriously think that the beam would last in duration long enough for hideous effcts to occur? It's not a GIANT PEOPLE MELTING DEATH RAY! It's a directional energy device. Its main purpose is to break up crowds to make them managable. Not make people stay in their homes in fear. The reason that the test subjects were advised to take off glasses and contacts is because the testers has to cover their own ass. Just because there were preventitive measures taken in a test, it doesn't mean that everyone exposed to this thing wearing glasses is going blind.
This device won't mutate people, or disfugre people, or cause world wide mass histeria and paranoia. It's just another waste of money that's necessary to appease the people that think that war, no matter how justified or unjustified, should be settled using wax bullets and paint filled IED's. Then if you get paint on you, you have to lie down and then after the battle both side will have poptarts and apple juice to unwind.
Once again charisma and believabilty > Technology. So many Network Admins become enamored with firewalls, IDS, and other kinds of tech savvy protection, that they usually will hold the door open for social engineers. Until employees and users are better educated and social engineering becomes part of the corporate threat model, we're going to see these types of attacks continue to grow in number
What we need is a good French Revolution-esque insurrection. Bring out the Guillitines!!! Let's just kill the money grubbing pigs!! After all this is the rational and intellegent thing to do. (I hope you can smell the sarcasm)
One thing that you may be overlooking, is that many of these people won't have been windows users, or computer users at all. They'll learn unix and linux just like a windows user learned windows. Experience is the best teacher.
I'm using 8.0.1 now and I'm very pleased. The fact that you can switch between rendering engines was all I needed to hear to sell me on it. It gives you the security of Mozilla/Firefox browsers and the option to render in IE.
Just as an aside; I noticed a lot of people whining because it was just like Firefox, and why didn't Firefox raise hell about basing Netscape on their 1.0.3 Browser. Well it's because Netscape contributes to the Mozilla foundation. They're all one big happy family.
The reason that companies release their software then patch later, is so that they gain a competitive advantage in the market.
For instance, Microsoft releases a new version of Office that has a few holes that need patched. Microsoft decides though that it would be cost beneficial to release the version now. This way people get the new fun features of Office NOW and Microsoft becomes the largest marketshare holder of a new feature.
It's much more beneficial for a company to release a new version quickly and patch, than it is to engineer a secure version and lose a foothold in the market.
He didn't make "unauthorized use" of their facilities, because no one came out and said "Hey you're not allowed to give this lecutre in any of our facilities." His request for space was denied, and that was because they couldn't blatantly say no.
It wouldn't have mattered if the guy had given the lecture outside on the lawn. They were going to come down on him for his content, not for his choice of venue.
Being a student at a liberal arts college, this entire situation is absolutely outrageous. There are lectures here on campus that are aimed specifically at issues like P2P, and even more politically charged conversations about homosexual rights.
Imagine if every professor that ever gave a lecture on unpopular subjects were fired. There would be a ton less professors, and even less intelletucal diversity.
Wow.. First off, this little parody you've brainstormed (debatable due to lack of proper equipment) isn't even relevant to the conversation. P2P isn't a topic that would degrade or offend anyone in a humanist sense.
Universities and colleges are places to share academic ideas professionally. P2P Networking has become synonomous with pirating and stealing, and as a result has been looked over as a useful technology to bring people and ideas together in an unregulated environment.
