  1. Re:Sell them to the UK on What To Do With Old DSL Modems? · · Score: 1
Unless of course you decide to spend the money - 80GBP pcm on average
    - on the [ahem] 'business' service from another provider...
That's what I've got. One Alcatel box with a single RJ45 for the
splitter side, four RJ45 ethernet ports and (ISTR, it's in a cupboard)
a single serial console port. Now why have I never hooked that up...
there's something to try after work tonight.

BT's service *is*, as you say, crappy though - USB, NAT, and a whole pile
of proxies (transparent) between you and the outside world.

The ethernet service on the other hand is better - real IP addresses, no proxies.
The only problem is that although we've got a different provider's network
delivered into the house, we're still relying on BT for the connectivity back
to that provider. And BT are crap - their ATM cloud through which all the
ADSL IP traffic travels flakes out on a regular basis.

But hey, that's what we get for having government watchdogs with no teeth.
A totally monolithic, bloated and profit-hungry telco who run everything.
There again, at least they don't go bust every so often :)

I realise that this could have been a dreadful miscarriage if justice, but let's get things in perspective here: The British Criminal Justice System is, in many ways, held to be one of the fairest in the world. In most respects this is probably correct due to the copious layers of burocracy making most (I said *most*, not all!) forms of corruption difficult to get away with. However there are some great, gaping holes through which either criminals get off their charges or innocent people are found guilty. I guess it's even worse in the US, where the 'celebrity lawyer' enjoys a much higher cult status than over here. A fashionable lawyer can work miracles, whether you're as guilty as sin or innocent as the day you're born. I guess what I'm rambling at is that there might be a few more false positives (gasp, shock, horror) found after this case, but it's a drop in the ocean compared to the number of people who are wrongly convicted or cleared *every day* due to the power of persuasion which some legal people have. Let's keep it all in perspective, folks.

Oh great, another "Mine's bigger than yours" type argument.

So you run a dualboot system. You are obviously soooo much more skilled than all those dumb lusers out there who don't know how, especially the Mac users. Do you ever write any Perl scripts? Are you familiar with "There's more than one way to do it"???

So just why is MacOS the WORST OS on the market? I think you'll probably find if you went out and really asked people what they think, the vast majority of Windows users would say something along the lines of "Huh? OS? What's that?"
Why are Macs not games machines? I remember showing some friends of mine Marathon Infinity's network gameplay and them being completely blown away by it - and some of them were hardcore Quake players!

Game developers have better things to do than blow time and money producing a game for a niche product that doesn't have nearly as many gamers as x86 machines do.

Just like publishers shouldn't publish any books that don't sell in airport bookstalls, TV moguls shouldn't make community TV shows, minority newspapers shouldn't be allowed, expensive sports cars shouldn't be made as only a few people can afford them... the thing is that the Mac is hardly a 'niche' product. Whatever percentage Apple currently have of the market is still pretty damned amazing when you consider just how many computers get sold each year.
Do us all a favour and go get some perspective before you start shouting your worthless drivel at us.
And yes, before you shout, I have two Macs. I also have about fifty various Linux/Solaris/HPUX boxes to look after at work, along with a RH6 box on my desk and a W98 laptop. I use them all.

There's more than one way to do it

knowing a fair bit about Industrial Revolution history helps.
    He's basically spot-on with the tech-lovers and tech-haters thing,
and who knows - if Babbage had actually been richer, maybe those
engines could've really happened. Now where would we be if that
happened? Instead of Babbage we chuck around the names of Turing
et al as the fathers of modern computing...

Let's face it, Gibson has written some really cool stories and has a
handle on what he thinks the future will be like. But remember, it's his
thoughts, kids - it'll probably all turn out to be as crap as today is in
    the end.

Don't get me wrong, mind you - I was totally blown away the first time
I read Neuromancer, so I can't wait to get my hands on the new one...
I hope it's got as good a cover design as all the others did :)

Why, oh why, is it that every time a rumour surrounding Apple gets into the public domain (sic) we get all manner of flamewars, this-really-is-the-end-for-them apocalyptic stories, etc etc etc.??

To put this all in perspective (and I'm not from the good ole US of A so forgive me for not knowing your cars very well) let us consider wanting to change your car...

How many of you with (say) a Chrysler Neon go out and buy a new engine that fits in, ummm, a Grand Cherokee?

Now, how many of you would complain if it didn't work? Or if you couldn't take your favourite steering wheel off the old car and onto the new one?

Try to keep some kind of perspective here kids. Remember that these things we're all using are *only* computers. You don't like what Apple are (rumoured to be) doing?

    Don't buy a Mac then

But hey, I guess most of the flames on here aren't from Mac users anyway...

What??? I figured education to be a bloody enormous market! The graphics business, where Apple had a massive presence until Adobe finally managed to get Photoshop to run properly on NT, now *that's* a niche market... big, but still niche.
