Be careful about extrapolating from one hire to Microsoft's big picture strategy. MS is a huge company and hiring one person is a nano fraction of their operating cost. If there was a 0.00001 probability that Ubuntu could sweep away their market it would still make sense for them to hire that person. Personally I think the odds are somewhat higher.
Changing over from any system to any other system, even a better one, is a big pain. The odds are always stacked in favor of the known problems rather than the new problems. In making the judgement of how much "system admin time" he is willing to put in, he needs to account for all the time he spends purging viruses, worms, and malware from his windows system.
You can get a surprisingly nice "macro" photo by just hand-holding the lens an inch or so in front of the camera body. If you have reasonably fast film, the picture is great and you can focus way up close. Use the SLR viewfinder for depth of focus and focus. Surprisingly, you don't have to go to great lengths to block light around the sides (barring direct sunlight of course). I've done this with a Pentax ME and 50mm lens held about 1-2cm in front of body.
A friend of mine came up with a clever workaround. Just make a little wallet or envelope of conductive material to hold the card. It will act like a Faraday cage and totally shield the card. When you want to use it you have to take it out though.
Should work well for the new passports!

My daughter is 13 and is addicted to gaim. What's the problem?
