Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Nokia slapped a proprietary license on the firewall, wouldn't the restrictions be in the Nokia license, not the BSD license? Your post makes no sense.
You do realize what a DIY computer is, right? They generally don't come with anything installed, considering they come in pieces in seperate boxes and all:-P
Thank god Slashdot is posting some well thought-out, well researched and well written news for once! I say every article on Slashdot should be by John Dvorak;)
LOL!!! Sue them for what exactly? You kind of need a law to be broken, damages, etc. Microsoft could toss you a 10 dollar bill for the time it takes you to change it back. The only damaged party would be Google/Yahoo.
I agree with that actually. My friend always uses Yahoo for search. I installed Firefox for her once, and she would completely ignore the search bar, which defaults to Google, and just navigate to yahoo.com to search. I then showed her how easy it was to switch the bar to Yahoo, and she started using it. People will use what they know.
1. Google's involvement in China isn't expected to bring Google any profit whatsoever in the short term, and it hurt their stock price, so I fail to see how it was done for short term gain. Please explain.
2. Your first sentence makes so little sense that simply trying to understand it is giving me a migraine.
3. I never said anything about Google being involved in politics, or whether or not I thought their involvement in politics was acceptable. i'm not sure where you are going with that to be perfectly honest, or where that part of your response even came from....
I simply stated that under the circumstances, I think they made the right decision, and I was asking what other decision would have been acceptable to people with your POV. I, and Chinese people I work with, think it would be absurd for Google to simply give up on China. While I don't care for Yahoo because of their actions in China, I think Microsoft and Google have made the best of a bad situation. Google.com in China is awful, with outages and broken links all of the time, and not having Google.cn in China isn't going to make things better, it will simply take away a useful service from the Chinese people.
Are you sure you were responding to the right post?
BTW, I find it funny that everyone decries Google and other web companies for their actions in China, but I have yet to see a single person say "This is what I think Google should have done.....". That was the point of my post, in-case you missed it.
What other choice did Google have? Seriously, everyone bitches at Google, but what would you rather them do? I've asked Chinese people I work with this very question, and they say it would be absurd for Google to withdraw their Chinese services, and wouldn't help the Chinese people at all. If every single Chinese person I've asked supports Google's actions, why do people of other nationalities have so much trouble doing so?
Let's say Google withdrew from China and left people in China with a barely accessible Google.com, Google would get to keep their good-guy image, but would it actually help the Chinese people? Do you think the Chinese government is going to allow a little web company to boss them around?
The Chinese people have to endure censorship, with or without Google's participation. Why take away a service that people in China find useful?
I think the very fact that Google is staying in China, after it hurt their stock price and their good-guy image, is a testament to the determination of the company's executives in doing what they feel is the right thing to do, and I respect the company more for it, irregardless of what anyone else thinks.
But don't you know, everyone on Slashdot is god and has the sole power to dictate what is good or evil, right or wrong, ethical or unethical, and everyone else has to do as they say or else?!?! [/sarcasm]
It still bugs me when Slashdot people say that Google is being unethical and evil. Who are you to decide what is unethical and evil? I think it would be unethical of Google to remove their services from China, as many people seem to want. Why do you get to decide what is ethical, and not me?
BTW, when I say you, I mean people who say those things, not the parent poster. I agree with the parent poster.
When you consider that Google scans all websites in their database to see which ones the Chinese government is blocking, and then removes those from their database, I don't see them as doing anything wrong. If the average person can't get to the site, why show it? And anyone who knows how to get to those sites they want to see, will also know how to use Google.com instead of Google.cn to find the websites.
Lol...lame response. You go from saying they've disclosed they data mine, to claiming you can no longer find the link, then you claimed you didn't actually say that, then I showed you that you were lying through your teeth, so now you resort to calling me lazy because I refuse to go and back up your assertions for you? So what is it, have they "disclosed they data mine" or not? I also read Slashdot and I have read numerous stories about Google data mining, but never "disclosing they data mine". I'm done talking to you, if you can't back up your statements, then simply don't say them, it's as simple as that. And btw, I looked through my profile and still fail to understand why I am unworthy of your response, wanna provide a link for that too? Oh, and a search for google discloses data, google reveals data, google discloses they data mine, all fail to find any evidence whatsoever of Google "disclosing they data mine".
Lol, this is dumb, you're obviously just a troll. Well, you've accomplished your mission, I've wasted enough time responding to you. Provide some links or don't talk to me anymore, as you're nothing more than a waste of my time.
Oh, and by the way, I used to make up fake stories then run and tell them to people, and when challenged I would say prove me wrong. Yeah....I was like 7 at the time and in Grade 1.
Funny.....you're making more blind assertions without providing even a simple link. Wanna provide some links that show I'm a hyopcrite? So let me get this straight, you were giving Google the benefit of the doubt by stating that they have "disclosed they data mine", and then stating that they turn mail data over to advertisers. You then refused to provide any evidence.
Why the hell am I wasting any more time talking to you? You were the one modded flamebait, not me.
Ummmm....so use Level 1 or 2 code??? I doubt any serious website would actually, purposefully, limit their audience to 10% of the market. I don't think you'll see very many sites implementing level 3 code....I know I wouldn't.
Ummm....how exactly was that immature? He said why he didn't think it would promote a monoculture. Just because he doesn't agree with you doesn't make his comment unwarranted, arrogant or immature. In-fact, those are the things I thought about your post when I read that sentence. Just a hint for the future, don't throw around accusations when they make no sense.
Firefox has been around in final version since November 2004. This project started about a week ago. It is not sponsored by Mozilla. I have yet to see a single site actually use this (I do use Explorer from time to time). So yes, they are competing fairly. Try thinking before commenting.
"That is just pathetic - soon there will be banners "Using Windows - switch to Linux, you will like it better, and maybe we will let you in our website". Doesn't firefox get enough promo already? So now they resort to spam. Say no to both and use Opera.."
1. SPAM is unsolicited email, not banner ads. Ads are what keep great content getting produced on the internet for free. They have nothing to do with SPAM. At least try to use the proper word when wasting my time with your comments.
2. They didn't resort to anything. This is not Mozilla's campaign, and it is not sponsored by Mozilla. It is simply a third party website that hosts some scripts that make it easy for noobs like me to put annoying banners on my website to encourage people to switch (and to make some dough while your at it).
3. Ummm, how is Opera any better than Mozilla in this regard? Of course Firefox is going to have more switch campaigns started by third parties, it is the more popular product. It's not Mozilla's fault.
To sum up your comment: BLAH BLAH [Insert random, non-sensical text] use Opera BLAH. I hate people who post dumb comments to promote a product. Your comment is just as annoying as a banner ad, and both are promoting browsers, so can your comment be marked as SPAM? [/rant]
Your original comment: Not to start a flame or war, but you do realize Google has disclosed they data mine(Automated Reading) all incoming and outgoing GMail? That way they can better 'market' information to you as well as classify you when your information is provided to advertisers?
Ummmm...what other way is there to read that? That's a very funny way to say that Google targets the ads in-house and doesn't turn data over, me thinks.
I defend all companies when people on Slashdot feel the need to lie about them to further their arguments (or lie about what they said afterwards). I don't think Google makes MS look less evil, we don't all share the same POV, in case you weren't aware of that. I don't have a problem with Microsoft, and I don't consider either company evil. A company is not a living creature with a conscious, therefore I don't think any company is truly evil. I think they use shady business practises at times, and I think a lot of their web services are shit, but I actually like their software (although I'll never give up my Mac).
Google has never admitted to handing over ANY data to advertisers. Google matches the ads to the person in-house. Google would have no reason for handing over this data to advertisers. In-fact, if the advertisers could use this information to target ads themselves without Google, it could hurt Google in the long run.
I have yet to read anything that says that Google takes mail data from its users, and turns it over to their advertising customers. Try using Google to find that link for me. K, thx, bye
I don't mind Google mining my activity for advertising purposes, it's not like they are alone in this regard. I'd be more scared of AOL than Google, and I'm not scared of them at all.
But if you have a link to prove that Google hands mail data over to advertisers, I'd love to see it. K, thx, bye
Nope, it's pretty clear they crawl the user mail to affect pagerank. A page that is talked about a lot in the mail is likely to be more important than others, so it goes up for given (Subject:) keywords.
How is it pretty clear? Do you actually have any evidence to back up your assertion? Am I missing something here?
Yeah, most of Windows Live does. Try using Windows Live Mail with Firefox...it isn't pretty to say the least. All of the features that make Windows Live Mail better than Hotmail are gone, and some of the features that make Hotmail usable are gone as well. You can't even mark a message as unread in Live Mail while using Firefox. No drag and drop, no preview pane. I have a Hotmail account that was using Windows Live Mail, but it is useless on my Mac, so I have now switched back to the Hotmail interface. My main email is gmail though, thank god.
I invited my non-tech friend to Gmail, and she used it as a second email account for a while. After trying out Windows Live Mail, she switched to Gmail on her main account, not liking the direction Hotmail was going.
People, when making arguments against Google's actions, conveniantly leave this fact out. They often state that Google has removed their access to these search results, when the people making the arguments know they are not being completely truthful, and are using this misconception to further their own arguments.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if Nokia slapped a proprietary license on the firewall, wouldn't the restrictions be in the Nokia license, not the BSD license? Your post makes no sense.

Ummm...last time I checked, it actually asks you once during the install and then never again, except for a little button most people will ignore.

Slashdot rumours are less accurate than what gets passed around a classroom, so unless I see an actual link I tend to not believe them.
