BTW: The asian game has its own unique problems... From what I hear, the police over there have special RL/PK units to combat the new phenomenon of taking RL revenge on an in-game PK.

Damn, two replies calling your idea stupid, but no one gave the reason. So, to shed a little light:

EMAIL is going to be a problem for any scheme which puts the choice of root solvers in the users' hands. This is because you do not send email directly to the recipient's email client, or even directly to their mailbox. Email has to bounce around the network-in-a-network of SMTP servers before it arrives at its destination, and each of those SMTP servers needs to use the same namespace to figure out where mail is going.

Let them cruise along at their own pace and absorb all the best ideas from the commercial games and learn from their mistakes. It's open source, so at least it won't be rushed out the door before its done (like some other games we know).

  12. WorldForge on Lord British Gives UO2 the Axe · · Score: 1

I was never an Ultima fan, but I loved UO. I played night and day for six months straight. I only gave it up when I realized that they were never going to make it the game it should have been.

I was expecting them to loosen up and let the players take some control over the world. Instead, they put a piece of software in charge of the criminal justice system (karma / reputation) and completely ignored any sense of realism. I can't seem to find the right words to properly frame my criticism, but it gives me the same sense of "that's just WRONG" that "security-through-obscurity" does.

So, I say forget Asheron's call, UO, UO2, EverQuest, and all that rot. They're closed source. The players are at the mercy of the developers. Why set yourself up for a fall, especially given the amount of time and energy that go into the characters?

I spend a LOT of time on those three boards. I know one of my handles was "Bird" and perhaps I might have used "Skandranon" there as well. Still quite a few people from that crowd gathered in EFNet #Cincinnati, but they're a surly crowd and don't take well to newcomers even if the newcomers are actually old timers.

  20. That's not the point, tho... on Should You Vote? · · Score: 1

What you're suggesting is to remove the top two choices by letting the two "sub-majorities" cancel each other out (perhaps with one having a slight edge over the other). That's kinda contrary to the whole point of having an election.

What we're trying to do in an election is arrive at a concensus. A Borda Count does a better job at selecting the candidate that everyone could live with because it lets every voter give their complete opinion on every candidate.

(I was going to give some examples, but using actual candidates' names and the logic used by the typical party member would come off looking a bit flamish.)

The math in a Borda Count isn't so bad. Each first place vote earns a candidate n votes, second place n-1, and so on, n being the number of candidates. The points are tallied, the winner is clear.

I don't know whether the Borda Count would eliminate the need to vote indirectly. Democracy is pretty screwed up, especially when a popular vote is used. How much of that is the democratic process and how much is the popular vote, I dunno. The US is a Republic, and probably ought to stay that way for the time being.

  21. Borda Count on Should You Vote? · · Score: 1

Direct democracy sucks. What we actually need (even more than campaign finance reform) is a new way of enumerating the votes. After reading some materials on the statistics of voting, I've been convinced that a slightly more complicated system such as a "Borda Count" would let the best candidate shine through regardless of party boundaries.

It works something like this... Each voter ranks the candidates according to preference. First place gets a certain number of points, second gets a little less, and so on. Then each candidate's points are totaled and the winner takes it.

One potentially amusing situation was highlighted: Say all the republicans rank Bush first and Gore last and the democrats do the opposite. In that situation, the second place candidates are more likely to win. We'd wind up with Nader or Browne, whom a lot of people think are a better choice than Bush or Gore anyway, but won't vote for them because of the percieved unlikelyhood that they'll win.
