Yep, the return-to-earth version of the Energia-2 was actually completed, and apparently worked quite well. Equivalents for the two larger designs were under development when the project was canceled.

  3. Re:Do We Have To Keep Carrying Our Fuel With Us? on Next NASA Vehicles To Resemble Shuttles · · Score: 1

NASA has a laser launch system in very early development; that might eventually be useful. Alternatively, they could always resurect NERVA or the Orion Project, though Greenpeace would have a collective fit.

Have a look at the Energia-4 rocket (used for Buran, which had no large rockets of its own). Something along those lines might work well.

The Saturn V has HORRIBLY expensive. Something more efficient would be nice. The best solution, though, might be simply to license the Energia rockets; the largest configuration (never used) was a considerably heavier lifter than Saturn V.

Are we alone? Almost certainly not; there's no reason it should have happened here and not elsewhere in this insanely large universe. Will we ever find out? Maybe not... how many technologically sophisticated cultures are there actively broadcasting their presence, in the wavelengths we're watching, close enough that we can hear them?

Well, a lot of those early rockets weren't your country's achievements, as such. They were largely Wernher von Braun's achievements; the US just picked up the bill, as Germany had before it.

  23. Re:Glad to hear it on Yahoo! Closes User Created Chat Rooms · · Score: 1

Yes, being in those rooms implicates anyone except police specifically assigned to investigation of such things, and POSSIBLY the vigilante justice people. An investigation could then easily establish whether they were a member of the vigilante thingy, and whether they had any child pornography on their computer (whether they were a member of the vigilante thingy or not, they shouldn't be downloading such images. It would be a mistake to assume that they're always the good guys; what better excuse to hang out in these rooms?

Even if a child never, ever enters one of these rooms, they're still a problem. They provide a venue for paedophiles to exchange pornography, tips on where to find children (SomethingAwful did a thing on a message board of this type a while back; it was quite horrific) and so on. And I think it's dangerous to assume that no child would ever enter such a room.
