Small correction: Michael Dell didn't invest 100 million into Redhat; he bought 100 million worth of debt from RedHat. The difference being that he expects RedHat to be financially sound enough to pay back his loan and the interest accumulated from it.
Rather than buying 100 million worth of RedHat stock which would mean, he has faith / believes / or wants to eventually buy out RedHat because he believes this company can grow and create wealth.
You have a good argument Steve, this doesn't detract from it much.
