    sigh, people like you really don't get it. they are not saying it is the best FPS ever made, or that it redefined the genre. What it did is introduce a whole new generation of gamers that didn't play FPS's to the world of death matches and capture the flag etc. was it a whole new awe inspiring game NO. did it redefine multiplayer action for millions of gamers, Most definitely.

    heres an example of the closeminded view of a /. poster. as others have pointed out where these devices have to work is in areas with no power or unreliable power supplies usually in conidtions that the average old PC would not survive a week in. Thankfully Microsoft and the $100 crank based laptop makers don't have your small minded view of the world.

    no it would not have been entrapment EVEN if it was a government law official, look up the meaning of entrapment before posting. entrapment requires a government official to talk into or coerce someone to do something illegal that they otherwise would not have done, this moron offered the code for sale on his web site and then followed through on his offer when approached. no entrapment, just another moron.

    Since when do you base economical or environmental decisions on what collectors want? ever heard of Bio diesel, ethanol or other non fossil fuel based fuels? every heard of engine conversions? ever heard of saab or volvo? not every country has a backward automotive industry like the US. If you are really so niave as to think this is not possible and enough slashdotters are marking you as insightfull then the world really is in trouble. Try doing some reading before posting garbage, perhaps yyour eyes will open.

    I could just say RTFA. these are not MS versus Linux/OSX etc bugs which most people seem to be taking it. It is applications written by EVERYONE for each system. The comparison is meaningless, 99% of the bugs for both are for 3rd party apps (not by MS or redhat or IBM etc), so this is a comparison of 1000's of 3rd party apps for all platforms. Why can't people just have a look before postly garbage comments, come on people is it that hard to RTFA (even if the article is total garbage)

    because most of the load time is NOT spent in the processor, it is spent on the system bus and transfering of data to and from harddrives. No OS can overcome the limits of the hardware it is on. an OS does many times more than what they did 20 years ago as do the business apps, so you basically have a lot of very meaningless benchmarks. If you think those 20 year old programs are good enough then go get an old 286 from a second hand store and load those old programs, I am sure you will find it enlightening how shitty they were.

    ahhhh yes always fair to compare a 10 year old product (vs 6 was 1996). VS.NET 2002+ has had VC++ with proper display editors. if you are going to troll at least try and use something from this decade.

    They were not always a monopoly and when they were not, "CONSUMERS" picked MS software. yes they may have abused this trust placed in them, but ultimaately it was the consumer that put them into the monopoly. MS was a very small company for many years and it wasn't until the mid 90's that they really gained there monopoly and abused it.

    no they were only charged with illegal maintence of there windows monopoly, nothing to do with xbox, msn or ISP markets which at the time they were not even really involved in.

    Actually many of the linux drivers are in kernel mode, MS actually implemented this back in the early 90's and changed to kernel mode for performance reasons back in NT 4 days. We are still waiting on linux to do it. perhaps in another 10 years linux will move away from monolithic kernels that let things like printer and graphics drivers run in kernel space.

    believe it or not the VAST majority of windows crashes are due to buggy vendor supplied drivers. Video drivers being the number one cause of these. very few are related to bugs in the OS.

    You seem to be confusing the kernel with the win32 subsystem. They are NOT the same thing, the call you are showing is a win32 call not a kernel call.

    no not plenty of room at all, that leaves 2 hours worth of HD content. Meaning movie studios and end users will still get stuck with getting stacks of discs for TV series or trilogies such as lord of the rings. One of the big selling points for many of these companies originally was the cost saving of being able to ship ONE disc. basically this format leaves them in the exact same shitty position they were in with current DVD format

    The 180 million is probably correct. The figures above are for the MSN portals. Microsoft has it main sites as well as MSDN and technet sites, all of which generate a huge amount of traffic.

IT is there to support the business, NOT to provide you with a beautiful environment that you as an IT person can be proud of. If the environment you are providing doesn't give them the flexibility to run what they want or need then it is you that have failed not them.

    sorry but way I see it the arrogance is coming from you. Beta program is not intended as a learning tool for the public or as a place for you to win rewards. There Beta and TAP programs are intended to help YOU by letting YOU ensure everything in the product works and that there are no issues for when you deploy. The reward is that you get a product that you can say you have tested already and that has no bugs that will directly affect you. people wanting to just get paid or receive gifts are the exact sort of people you don't want on a BETA program, you want companies that want to test real world high end apps where the incentive is that when they upgrade they want to know it works.

    if you can crash the browser it means you are probably in a buffer overflow situation or some other potentially exploitable bug, these are EXACTLY what malicious people look for. just because the proof of concept only crashes the browser doesn't make it useless for malicous people.
