  1. Led Zeppelin to Counter Strike on The Social Impact of Gaming · · Score: 0

"Filthy" novels, pre-code movies, comic books, Rock 'n' Roll, TV, video games... It's just a long line of easy "moral" targets for politicians to act like they're solving something instead of dealing with the actual problems.

Politicians target these things that you mention as a means of responding to the social expressions of the time. There will always be a pull between the generations of that which is "old" and "new". What the new generations create as expression and expiramentation, or what they repackage as new, is what's important to examine.

People are just as amazed listening to Led Zeppelin now as they were 35 years ago. 35 years from now Counter Strike will be just as amazing. Why is this you ask? Because we love it. It lets us say what we want to say when we want to say it. It provides an outlet for the creativity a generation dies to express and experience.

Listening to Immigrant Song while getting headshots, Stairway To Heaven while exploring a new map, and getting knife kills with Kashmir in the background are moments which transcend. Any CS players out there know what I'm talking about?

most memorable theme music award: super mario bros. or something else?

  3. Re:Dear Nintendo on Nintendo Quarterly Profits Down 80% · · Score: 0

SNES was the last "good" consol. it had a controler without too many buttons, wasn't too uncomfortably big, and didn't have stupid joystick missery. the game selection was diverse in every catagory and the conosol was cool without looking like some absurd cross between modern art and a plastics factory. if you wanted a joystick with NES or SNES, you could go buy one for 5 dollars and snap it onto your controller yourself. "let's make the damn things shake! let's stick as many buttons as we can on it! let's make it so no human hand of any shape can hold it comfortably! let's have people who don't game design the controllers because somehow that's a good idea!"

    i want the SNES2!

  4. Re:Sad on Nintendo Quarterly Profits Down 80% · · Score: 0

i don't think any of us will ever forget the first time we picked up a nintendo controler. i remember opening my NES up christmas morning. coolest gift EVER!!! it didn't matter that i didn't get anything else. that was back when pinball was more fun than 99% of arcade games and NES was arguably more fun than pinball

what changed with videogames? first the arcade games turned into highly profitable crap from ugly-to-look-at-with-poor-play-control crap and then the arcade games made the cross over onto NES and Sega and SNES. pffft, remember NEO GEO? somewhere in there the video games started becoming less fun and more win oriented.

super mario and zelda weren't about winning, they were about chosing your own way to the goal. warp tunnel? puzzles? themes like that are starting to make their way back into main stream consol gaming. they've been gone for too long. i want 10 different ways to get to the same result and because that makes me want to go back and play the level at least 10 times, sometimes more.

and think about this: how many of those NES theme songs do you remember? i can still hear ducktails playing but i can't tell you the theme music from a single game released post SNES. these new consols are just less fun.

  5. And The Scariest Thing Is... on Fox to Purchase Myspace · · Score: 0

The social networking of MySpace is one of the things which makes the internet wonderful. Our forms of communication are some of our most important rights today and if you don't like the way something is run, organized, or created, then you can go find a version that's more suitable, at least on the internet. What FOX News, specificaly that bastard Rupert Murdoch, says with this buy out is your means to communicate and express are no longer your own.

I see this as the first step in ending the right to community property. Musicians and garage bands who have put .mp3's up on my space, make sure FOX doesn't steal your work and claim copyright over it. I wouldn't be surprised if they used some stolen .mp3's as the basis for the music of their next horribly political sitcom/cartoon granting the creater no rights or residuals. This is disgusting and it's going to extand well past underground music. I don't think it's conspiracy theory to guess that they'll be using the vast collection of MySpace user info in some evil, dark, republican, political scheme. It may not be likely but, once they realise the potential, it certainly is possible.

I see a bleak future in which people create media they don't actually own. I hope every single MySpace user terminates their account. But that probably won't happen.

  8. What about... Oedipus complex meets... foldspace? on New Model Solves Grandfather Paradox · · Score: 1

yourThat article said NOTHING new but killing dad reminded me of Oedipus.

Going back in time to kill your father is one order of time line interference. Sending your own angry mother to do it is more interesting.
But if your mom goes back in time to meet you while you kill your dad and conceives before returning to the present, what order of time line interference would that be? Will you and your mother give birth to...you? And can you watch???
