Those of you who have not tried it yet try it out, if not for this project we would not have OpenSSH, OpenNTPD, and many more, if you support no other project then support this one.

You need to keep in mind that electricity rates are not flat across the board, for example I live in Washington State where we rely heavily on Hydro-electric power. I also have 6 machines (4 of which are 1.0Ghz, 512MB RAM, 1 of which is a dual 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, and 1 of which is a 2.0GHz, 512MB RAM) and one laptop that run ALL of the time (the laptop is turned off when I bring it into the office but that is few and far between. The point is with all of this running I still pay between $90-$100 per month for power. Based on your assumption of $15-$20 per month per machine 6 x 15 = $90 6 x 20 = $120, so in order to make your assumptions correct that must mean that I do not heat my apartment (3br 2ba), do laundry, dishes, watch tv, turn on lights, or anything else for that matter.

Now just to clarify a few thing within my post, I have electric heat, the machines I mentioned are always on. I also have a couple that I keep turned off because I have no need to turn them on. If and when I have a need to turn them on and leave them on I will. I know some of you will consider this wasteful, however consider that everyones priorities are different and EVERYONE is wasteful, they are just wasteful in different ways (some people don't combine trips, some people throw away batteries, some people use styrofoam). The indignation that has been shown in this thread (not by the parent post) is simply holier than thou B.S. meant to fulfill a need to quelch their own guilt.

If you haven't been able to tell I have little patience for hippies. I live in Seattle where the hippies are far from endangered.

Besides, next time before you tell someone to "Get a clue" how about you put some facts in your post instead of citing a comment that you had made in another post.

  4. Develop Objectives on Setting up Linux in an Inner City Public School? · · Score: 1

In a classroom environment you need to have clearly outlined objectives for the students to learn so that you can determine if your hardware/software will meet those needs. I would develop these objectives and determine where in these objectives these machines will fit in (perhaps hardware or even electro-static discharge training). Then the next thing to do is find some adaquate hardware, perhaps you could solicit donations from some of the larger companies in your area, larger companies are generally on some sort of hardware replacement schedule. So you may be able to get some fairly new hardware. Then once you have all of the hardware you need involve the kids from day one (even if it is on an after school basis).

This is why the Tsunami was able to do the damage it did. There is no way to predict something that is completely random. And bottom line no matter what you meteorology majors think you know it is still random to the Human race, if it wasn't then Natural Disasters would not make the news because we would prevent them.

Besides just cause it got hot this summer does not mean that it is because of anything we did. The earth will go through cycles (hot/cold). Worst case scenario is our emissions will kill every person on this planet (directly) but to think that we could bring about the end of the world is just vain.

Besides at a price (newegg) of $115 each that is $34,500.00. That is insane. The only way you could justify spending that much money on this is if it was not going to be a nightmare to install (i.e. single box). Besides the fact that you would still have to buy powered usb hubs to power all of these bus powered devices. This may be a great solution up to one tower, however any more than that and you are wasting your time.

Here is where I weigh in on this: Publishers of textbooks do so for the money. It is simple, they copyright their material and sell it. They will not be able to simply get this $100 laptop and keep all the textbooks they need on it, the 'e-books' will have to be purchased/licensed as well. Now if the laptops were connected to the internet then the could simply utilize it as a textbook, however do people actually think that the third world has a cable/dsl connection sitting idle just waiting for a laptop? Telcos will not provide internet into a new market if they cannot make money off of it. If the residents do not have money they will not waste money building the infrastructure.
