I work at an Archtechtural firm as the CAD Manager/IT Guy. We are a largish firm with 3 other IT staff; one systems, one network, and one Manager. None of them "Like" computers. They all just chug along and follow the "How To Be An IT Staffer" three ring binder.
When the new computers, monitors, cameras, scanners, or these really cool LCD pen tablets come in I have the box open before you can say "where's the exacto knife?" I was playing around with some of the old monitors here setting up a triple 21" monitor setup and after trying some of the combinations we may do it on all the systems, and save space (aka $) in our new office because of it.
My whole reason for keeping this job is to play with the big toys. In a few months I will have my wireless 800Mhz tablet PC and then I can really have some fun playing around and I know the other IT guys here will just shrug....But the architects here, they grew up playing with blocks:)
Nope read your physics book again. As the universe gets older entropy will increase the disorganization of the universe. Also, modern Physics seems to show that we are in an "Open Universe", or a "Flat Uninverse." In either case the Universe will keep expamding forever, give or take a few 100 trillion years.:)
When you spread a finite amount of energy over a expanding volume the energy density will decrease, or in other words, it will get colder.
A prime analogy is Slashdot itself. As a discussion increases in age the number of useless, uninformed, or ignorant posts such as yours increase to the point where a the whole thing in completely disorganized.
And BTW if you are indeed an Anonymous Coward then why bother signing your name "dufus?"

During College we used Quake2 and the Build editor from Duke Nukem for walkthroughs of theatrical set designs. The actors and directors could check out all the passages behind the set and they could tell what sight-lines they would have to deal with.
We also used it for Virtual sets that we could project up on the back of the physical set and the actors could interact live with the Virtual set via the VR operator.
I saw a mention of this several months ago and imediately thought of the perfect application of this tech.
Take two long (and strong) cables about 30 km long. Strap two magnetosphere generators to the ends of each cable so you have two floppy dumbbells. Attach the centers of these two cables together with a generator along the axis. Face the construct so that the axis is perpendicular to the suns rays. Turn the opposite ends of the two cables on until they spin around the common axis and are heading towards the sun. Then you turn on the other generators until they spin around. You can pull all that energy out with the generator. If you run simple numbers the energy gets huge very fast.
I see this more as an annoyance than a real problem for the long run. Either the LOC will get a new librarian or the present one will change his mind eventually. The numbers of people that will expect all or most information in the world to be online will grow amazingly in the next decade. He is in control of that information and I doubt hecould stand under the political pressure of so many for that long. Later Mick D

So if you take a 1000 AI monkeys and line them up at typewriters will the eventually write hamlet? And, hey with distributed processing we could recreate the greatest works of literature in no time. So who wants to write AI-Monkey@home?:)

Think about this way. In few trillion years 4 degrees above absolute zero will be well above room temperature and all our dreams will be answered. :)
I love the fact that they are looking for an "African American" to play the guy "raised on cargo ships." in space. They need an American for that?
I guess if the Actor happens to be Canadian then screw him.

This is a biggie as presents go but it would be ideal for those who like to muck with new toys.
I would like a 3d printer with scematics of all lego pieces ever created. Think of it, never run out of that one special piece again.
If you want to build that life sized lego Space shuttle just get enough "3D Printer Goo" (tm) and start snapping pieces together.
Check out the similar article here if you can't get to the sciencedaily site. http://abcnews.go.com/sections/science/DailyNews/s upervision060900.html
