  1. My 2 cents on What Should People Understand About Computers? · · Score: 1

The way i told my mom to use computer is...
just use it whichever way u wanted, if u have important information, send it to yourself via email (i get her a gmail account, and i learn from mistake that i SHOULD know her password) dont' keep anything important in your computer. and just USE it! browse whatever site u want.

having said that, my plan is.. if it got any adware, malware, virus, whatever ... all i am going to do is ... format/reinstall (i am actually planning to get a dummy harddrive and make an image of it. so i can just restore the image.
and of course, all my other computer block anything from her IP, in case she got worm.
one thing i would say is.. skip the history part... they won't care.... and i think it should be OS oriented (assuming will be M$ windows XP) just focus on ONE OS, and tell them how to boot up (or better, turn on the computer), how to hold the mouse, how to click, how to double click, click what to "go to the web", pick an email service and explain how to use icon by icon (unfortunately, in this case, i think hotmail will be better cuz you won't get question on how to get invitation from other gmail user!), how to read the content of a webpage (my mom did ask me what to do after she got to bestbuy's website! she just stare at the main page, and stucked!)... explain EVERY tiny detail that you and i might think is OBVIOUS/NATURAL!.
good luck on the book, once u done some preminliary work, i guess we (/.er) can comment on more!
PS: don't even bother explaining how great /. to them... Personally i am in an IC design company, which should be FILL with geeks, and i heard some ppl during lunch said /. is too geeky for them ..@~#@!#!!

a Network drive enclosure support raid, using SMB and FTP to transfer.
so just get 2 300G HDD and then u got a 1/3.3333333 TB raid file storage with SMB and FTP access

AND it only cost about 100-150 for the enclosure...

  3. Questionable on Utah Teens Invent Better Air Conditioner · · Score: 1
First of all, peltier is essentially a forward biased PN junction, so if u look at a 1.5x1.5 sq inches block.. it's essentially hundreds of diode connected in parallel..
current draw is AMAZINGLY large... tiny block i have is about 1x1 inch, draws 4-5Amp at 12-15V.. (5Ax15V=75W),and that marely cool a small cooler i atttached into down about 10 degree below ambient...according from my friend's volvo user manual, the AC fuse was rated at 15A, that can feed 3 of these.. and i doubt it will cool the whole interier in the summer.
of course .. someone can modify the wiring and feed more juice to it.. but how many do we need is the question
and the heat are ALL need to release to surrounding... need some really serious heatsink there if u dont' want "another peltier to cool it down :p".
so.. unless someone has come up with a better peltier than the one we see in cooler and those desktop fridge.. i don't see how it will cool my stationwagon like the good old AC there.

more environmentally friendly.. definely.. cuz no freons. that's a plus.. must give credit to these 2 "young inventors"

Life time.. THAT i am not sure 30 years.. not sure what grade u are getting

This was not new, I used to work in an electronic component store in downtown toronto, selling like COMPONENTS.. so like caps, resistors..etc.... and there was a girl who is from the art college (later found out) comes in all the time.. and get various and odd value caps and resistors... in very discreet form.. so.. this got us curious.. and i decided to ask her why.. and turns out that's what she's doing.. she's making jewellery with these "colorful-bits-and-pieces" (her words) and sell them in the college ...

i am dual screen user... and 2048x768 on my 2 tiny 15 inches is not enough.. (working toward to get 2 of the 19 inches soon.. so i can run higher) let alone u let me use half of the vertical resolutions .. 512x768? that's like... 8 years ago resolutions.... so.. for computer use.. definately a no-no

some said game console.. where u don't need to stick with those split screen anymore... well.. guess what.. most game console now got network access.. most gamers doesnt' even leave home when they play multiplayer... so not much use either...

plus.. YES... it is some old tech from the cereal box...

I didn't know a master degree is that easy in NYU... this is more like a high school project or something... .. Ok.. maybe not the motion detection camera stuff... but... who need a camera to detect amount of motion when u can use a PIR sensor and an integrator circuit...

besides.. i thought this is presenting of having multiple screen... why do i want a few birdies flying on my TV and how much rain it pour on that poor guy on the bench when i trying to play a FPS on my console...

sorry if my tone sounds bad.. but i think this is just .... .. ... .........

  6. Resolution, refreash rate, one way or the other on First Shareable Interactive Display · · Score: 1

This trick is like those old school kids toys that have multiple image using the same method... however.. the problem with this.. is... there are trade off.. always trade off.. Either u choose to lower your vertical resolution to half (just like this case).. when everyone nerds is trying to push their screen to 2048x****, that's like taking one high res screen and chop it to half... or.. with that polarizer method someone mentioned, current fastest LCD on the market is about 12ms, which is about 83Hz max refresh rate if u try to refresh the whole screen with completely different image.. (alternating 2 different image..), then that's like down to 42Hz ... that IS some serious flickering ... also.. another thing is.. the Twist nematic crystal are making the light from the back lite already polarized.. that's why if u try to wear a polarized sunglass to watch a LCD, colors sometimes look funky (depends on polarization angle) So.. that won't work quite well either... (not until OLED gets popular.... maybe) I mean it might be good to use it at some secure terminal where u don't want other ppl view it but u... but then.. most cheaper LCD got narrow view angle anyway... some even look funky when u look at it straight.. :D so.. i mean... it's good idea.. but... is it practical...?
