I use Gnumeric almost everyday at my job. My coworkers created a lot of Excel documents for various tasks.
They may be simple spreadsheets, but without Gnumeric, I would have to use Windows and Excel to actually perform most of my "management" tasks, whether they are simple or complex spreadsheets, I need an application to open them. Gnumeric has done a remarkable job!
Are Excel spreadsheets the best method of keeping track of our tasks? No, but it's what we currently have, and what I have to deal with on a daily basis.
These kind of activities are perfectly normal in my work environment.
We go out for drinks, we go over to each other's houses. We play billiards, we bowl, we watch movies, we play video games.
In fact, my wife invited everyone over for Thanksgiving. We are now having 2 other families coming over. This is normal behavior for our team. Maybe other places should try it.
It amazes me that there are so many posts saying that these kind of relationships cannot happen at work. It obviously depends on the kind of people that are brought in by HR/management. All the people here (NetAdmins) are friendly, and young, and have fun. Those are probably the keys. Do I have other friends? Yes! Do I REALLY consider the relationships at work friends? Yes!
If I leave the company, I will definitely stay in touch with these people. They are great. They are my friends.
In any case, I received an email from one of my previous employers while at Purdue. The email contained pictures of 2 trucks that were completely destroyed.
One was a box truck that had no "box" left, as it had completely disintegrated. The interior was torched.
The second round of pictures were for a full-size van that was also torched.
There is no excuse for the destruction of other people's property like that. Especially considering things like this make the school look bad, raise tuition, and cause other problems that students don't want/need to deal with.
I have to agree with you about the Computer Technology department at Purdue. I am a recent graduate of CPT - Telecommunications and Networking (May '00).
I feel that it did a good job of preparing me for the 'real-world', as much as a college curriculum can. There is of course no substitute for internships.
I have repeatedly received compliments from my employer and fellow employees about my knowledge level coming out of school. That isn't completely due to CPT, because I did work hard out of class, but I do give them some credit.
From what I have seen, the Telecommunications and Networking program is one of the best in the nation for network admins, and my Solaris class has proven invaluable!
So to sum it all up, if you don't want to be a programmer, and you don't want to design chips, you may want to take a look at Computer Technology (and more schools are starting to offer similar courses, but Purdue was one of the first).
Purdue Salvage is where all stuff that University no longer wants goes. You can find all kinds of things there, from beds and desks, to computer parts. It was a great place to buy old hardware!
When I was at Rose-Hulman they had crappy AMS laptops. It was the second year they had laptops there and it was interesting to see how pissed the previous years laptop owners were when they saw how much better ours were. In any case, they still sucked, hard drives falling out of them (friends of mine actually duct taped the hdd compartment shut), overheating, etc.
The laptop was $5400 I believe, and because I left after 1 year, I still owed ~ $3500 on it which they wanted me to pay for it. I ended up selling it to a transfer student into Rose who didn't want to pay for one of the new machines.
All in all, they were nice to have, not terribly useful (still had my desktop machine), but it was nice to be able to ignore the professors in class by irc'ing, sending email, or doing whatever else. Without the laptop I now just fall asleep in some of my classes.

I find it somewhat interesting that they want your Student ID number in order to get the free CD shipped to you. Are they actually going to call up the school and check the enrollment records?
And I am not going to be giving out my SSN (Purdue Student ID = Social Security Number) to LinuxOne!
It actually looks like the company is located in Lafayette, IN, near Purdue University. Maybe we should get PLUG (Purdue LUG) to go knock on their door?!
Since I live off campus I don't have that availability. Fortunately Purdue is offering DSL at a discount (you don't pay ISP fee) so you can get 768k down / 128k up for $40 a month. Not terrible, and satisfies most of my bandwidth needs. Otherwise I just go to work and use the PC's there and then send stuff to my box. You can also get Cable Modems out here too. It's amazing that somewhere in Indiana has some real technology.
Purdue has recently done some complaining about domains pointed at resnet.purdue.edu addresses. According to them it is not allowed, even if it is a.org. My personal interpretation is that it should be OK as long as it is not a commercial site. A fellow Slashdotter got hit by Purdue for that one!
I just took a job in Phoenix. I do not start for another 6 months, as I need to graduate first.;)
Several things lured me to the Phoenix area:
High-speed Internet access (supposedly cable and DSL)
Relatively low cost of living (especially compared to SV or Chicago, etc)
Warm/Hot climate (Indiana blows!)
Activities (You can drive a couple of hours and do anything you want)
Mesa - Cubs Training Camp (Geek wives that love baseball)
In contrast, I personally feel that Indiana does not offer much to a 'geek'. It is cheap living, and you can get high-speed Internet access in some areas, but it still sucks.;)
Good point. Mabye it's the fact that the note was in italics that I completely missed that. And yes, I know how to check URLS. In fact, I tried several combinations before posting that message so I wouldn't feel like a moron. I don't think it helped. I'll classify myself as a moron on this issue.
I noticed that the link for the pictures is not correct. Does anyone know of any other pictures of the event? I for one am looking forward to the nice, blue, plaid shirt!
Purdue just recently signed a MSCA (Microsoft Campus Agreement). All students and faculty receive the main microsoft products (Win 98, NTWS, Office 97 or 2000), Frontpage, and Visual Studio 6 for $5 per product. So the 5 CD version of Visual Studio is $5 total. All of those same products are site licensed now for all lab PC's too. How many Univerisities are going to be to turn that down? That is definitely going to force the Mac's from the labs.
I haven't heard any talk of having to switch servers to NT. I'm a Computer Technology student and NT is already used everywhere in CPT. The CS and engineering departments are heavily Unix, and don't seem to be wanting to change that anytime soon. I especially wouldn't want to lose our Linux mirrors.
The acquisition of Visio by Microsoft really does not surprise me. How could Microsoft not own a product that is the #1 seller in a market? You know it must drive them crazy.
VH1 is pretty cool. They added it to our cable system here at school this year, and is one of my favorite channels. MTV is the one that sucks - they rarely play music (although we have M2 now, which is cool too). I like watching the specials on the bands of the 80's and seeing how screwed up they were/are, and what happened to them. Interesting stuff.
Parents need to be involved!

I fully agree with what has been said on this thread so far. A parent does need to be at home with their children. The number of single parents in this nation is staggering, and I, for one, do not want to be involved in something like that. I am getting married in less than 4 months, and my wife are planning on having kids in the future (a few years from now). My wife is going to be an elementary school teacher, and when we have kids, she is going to quit working. This is by her own accord, she wants to be at home with the kids. Personally, I find this great, because I feel that is extremely important to a child's upbringing! Parents need to have a bigger role in their children's lives, and really show the kids that they love them!

So thank you Gnumeric team!!

This happens fairly frequently at Purdue.

I always knew Indiana was full of idiots.
