  1. Re:Anyone Use 3Tera's AppLogic? on Amazon EC2 Now More Ready for Application Hosting · · Score: 2, Informative

When you use LayeredTech as your hosting provider, it's included with no separate license price. LT's prices are very reasonable as well.

  2. Anyone Use 3Tera's AppLogic? on Amazon EC2 Now More Ready for Application Hosting · · Score: 2, Interesting

We looked at the EC2 solution when we started developing our hosted offering and didn't care for the new IP address when, and if, something went down. We went with a hosting company called LayeredTech. They offer public and private VPS and VPDC solutions. The really cool thing that has impressed me is they run 3Tera's AppLogic platform. It lets you visually (through a web ui) create "applications" based on "appliances". There is a standard portfolio of prebuilt applications (SugarCRM, etc.) and templates for LAMP, etc. So, we build our application by taking a firewall appliance, a CentOS appliance, a gateway, a MySql appliance, glue them together, customize them, and then create our own template. You can specify down to the appliance level, the amount of cpu, memory, disk, and bandwidth each are assigned which let's you scale up your capacity simply by tweaking values through the UI. We can now deploy our Rails/Java hosted offering for new customers in about 20 minutes on our grid. AppLogic has automatic failover so that if anything goes wrong, it reploys your application to a new node in your grid and restarts it. It's not as cheap as EC2, but much more powerful. It's definitely worth a look.

  3. Absolutely Dead Wrong on Why Online Multiplayer Isn't That Important · · Score: 1

Come on. Competition is competition. If this were true, then regular sports competitions wouldn't be exciting to the competitors. In fact, I think the opposite is true. Playing with people you have no emotional attachment to is much more fun. I commonly play with people I know. However, I found it much more exciting in playing 1 on 1 in the FIOS tournament for HL2 : DM with people I've never met.

  4. Everyone's is Missing the Obvious - This is HELL on Eerie Sounds from Saturn · · Score: 2, Funny

Not sure why anyone else doesn't understand this as clearly as I do. Saturn is where Hell is. These sounds you are hearing are obviously the moans and cries of the forever damned as they are repeatedly ripped apart. In addition, if you listen to the McGreevy VLF recordings, these are obviously sounds of the doomed souls being dragged to Hell (Saturn) by Satan's minions. Get Yee Hither! Repent!

  5. WebObjects ahead of its time on WebObjects Now Free With Tiger · · Score: 1

I hired on at NeXT to run the services group focused on WebObjects many years ago. I can tell you, like most things at NeXT, the stuff was ahead of its time. We had a lot of large customers: Dell, Disney, Sharper Image (their first online store was WO). NeXT had an opportunity to build the standard for a great web app development tool, but it was well on its way to getting bought by Apple, so the focus wasn't there.

  6. Re:dell's website now runs .Net on WebObjects Now Free With Tiger · · Score: 1

I was hired at NeXT specifically to run the services arm of WebObjects delivery when it was released. Dell was one of my customers (of course). The reason the dropped WebObjects is because of Dell's relationship with Microsoft. Microsoft gave them not only free software, but free services as well.
