The truly paranoid will disbelieve this research as conspiracy backed FUD/disinformation. Hearing voices coming from radios and TVs telling you to do stuff is classic paranoid schizophrenic behaviour..

People refusing to take responsibility for their own actions is one of the world's biggest problems IMO.. e.g. "It's not my fault I'm an angry/unhappy/crazy person. It was the government, it was my parents, it was my 4th grade piano teacher, Ms Thompson... it was my neighbour's dog Sam."

I envy paranoids; they actually feel people are paying attention to them.

Linus quote? Cool. No need for the whole quote though - it works just fine as it is IMHO. :-D I just posted a Sunday morning sermon-rant to my blog - check it out if you're, ahem, suspicious of Microsoft.. I know a lot of smarter people than me have written stuff like this but I thought it was pretty funny. Then again, I'm hung-over.

I think their business model is hella flawed too.. Hopefully this kind of 'smart object' will become more popular. I've seen a few on thinkgeek.com already, but I think there's quite a bit of potential in this area of network information visualisation appliances.. Japanese language nazi - 'kawai' make good digital pianos 'kawai-i!' (pronounced kawai-e) is the favourite word of most Japanese schoolgirls .. 'cute!'

Isn't this what Mark Weiser was talking about with ubiquitous/pervasive computing - computers disappearing from sight?

I'm a big fan of Tufte's work - this is just a new kind of visual literacy IMHO..

Very cool stuff - I want to see 'smart objects' on the shelves of my supermarket, next to the CD-Rs and telephone plug adaptors.

I want cool wireframe flythroughs like they had in the TV series .. I wonder how long the hardware of the day took to render those :-)

One of these devices with realtime 3D graphics technology would be great - imagine the visualisation possibilities for a film director.

Also, why just historical data? Businesses could broadcast stuff too. You'd never need to get lost in a shopping centre/department store again.
  10. Layoffs - evil but necessary? on HP to Layoff 15,000 Employees · · Score: 1

If you think of the modern corporation as a machine for making money then it makes sense to re-engineer its cogs periodically.

Unfortunately the cogs in this case are people. Where I work they laid around 100 people off 3 years ago and there is still a lingering feeling of resentment. However, the company is now profitable , so at least some people got to keep their jobs - better than everybody hitting the unemployment line, right?

Fortunately for us and unfortunately for uncreative management, layoffs are not a panacea - they've got to keep a few of us monkeys around (at least in the forseeable future), right?!

  11. Palm vs PocketPC : the Bosch opinion on Pocket PC vs. Palm Showdown · · Score: 1

Firstly I should confess I've never owned a PocketPC . I've got friends who have them however. I've happily stuck by my m500 and recently acquired LifeDrive. The main reasons are:

Complexity: do I need a fully fledged PC in my hand? Sure, the PocketPC doesn't crash as much as PalmOS but rebooting (once every 2 weeks or so for me) is a minor inconvenience. PocketPCs don't run that fast even on considerably faster hardware than the Palms because of the complexity of OS. Faster processors eat into battery life too.

Anger: I get angry enough at Microsoft when I use my PC at work/home and it behaves erratically (how politically correct was that phrase!). I can't carry that much anger around with me - it isn't healthy!

PIM Apps: Should be simple and seamless. The Palm's good in this area - a lot of stuff has been in the OS for years, and it all works really well in day to day operation.

I've read a great article about designing the Palm Pilot UI where they mentioned trying to create a feeling of zen calm in the user. Microsoft probably aims for more of a berzerker rage :-)

To the ladies out there: when you go adventuring, are high heeled boots, knee high skirts and boob tubes what you like to wear?

When will games stop trying to appeal to the hormones of 15 year old boys? Honestly, noone's got one hand on the mouse and the other hand on their schlong while playing games.. do they?!

  15. Making progress, but it's not Earth yet on Google Maps Now Cover Whole World · · Score: 2, Interesting

Google may be full of very smart people but they still can't geliminate the Mercator projection distortion (although this is an aesthetic gripe) Google Maps is a clever web app that gets around many of the limitations of the browser, but I'd like to see a rich client, something like the 3D virtual globe Earth from Snow Crash perhaps? It doesn't have to be real time but it'd rock if it was - even if it was time delayed. I'd pay USD$5 a month for that, mainly for the eye candy. Anyone else interested?
