Ugh. Why do people think they have to pay $30-40k/semester for an education. I got my MSCS from a state school and only paid a fraction of that. If someone already has experience, and just wants a line item on a resume, why pay Harvard prices?
Which leads to my next gripe. I honestly do not understand people who go to top tier schools, rack up debt, and then whine about it. I went to a state school. I worked hard, got reasonable grades and now make a comfortable living. Going to a top tier school wasn't necessary. Like all things in life, you get out what you put in, and school is no different. An Ivy League education is not required to get a great job or make lots of money. If, after you have finished school, you find yourself burdened with "crushing debt", you have nobody to blame but yourself.
tl;dr - a great education can be had for cheap
I agree. Why does a belief on God have to exclude an acceptance of evolution? Or vice-versa? I believe in God, I also think that evolution is scientific fact. If anything, the wonders of science strengthen my belief and increase my awe of Gods power.
There are many mysteries I do not understand, both scientifically and theologically. But I have often wondered, Why couldn't God use evolution as part of the creative process?
This is probably one of the most insightful things I have ever read on Slashdot.
I'm not kidding
My wife is a stay at home mom, by choice. There are so many women she meets that just can't belive it! She is sometimes treated as if there is something wrong with her. I mean, why would any woman choose to be at home? You have been liberated, after all!
Hello?!? Yes, there are women who think the best contribution they can make to society is to stay at home and do their best to raise good kids. Hooray for house wives!
I think it is beyond some people to ever be computer literate. I can't count how many times I have explained to the exact same people how email works. They do eventually, but it has taken some of my users over a year.
I watched our office manager use tabs and spaces to center the title of a document. This is someone who is supposed to be proficient in Word!
My favorite: A user was having problems formatting a document. She had written it at home, then emailed it to herself at work. When she opened it at work, the formatting was all wrong. I went over to see if I could help. I asked what version of Word she uses at home, thinking there might be some compatability issues. Here is the rest of the dialog.
Me: What version of Word do you use at home?
User: I don't know.
Me: OK, what Operating System do you use at home? (If she has XP, maybe she used OfficeXP)
User: It's a Toshiba.
Me: No, that's the computer manufacturer. Do you use Windows XP?
User: It has a sticker on the front that says Pentium 3
I don't normally feed trolls, but what the heck...
I am a network and system admin for an elementary school district. I have a BSCS and almost ten years of industry experience. I know my way around a server room.
I don't work in Education because no one else would hire me, I work in education because schools and school districts need IT people too. Sure the pay isn't great, but I have more freedom to experiement with projects that interst me, and I feel like I'm making a difference. Most people who work in IT in education do it because they believe in it. It becomes a cause.
The IT people who work in education are an amazing bunch. They work miracles with tight budgets, scant resources, a clueless userbase and (often) clueless supervisors. Again, because most of us believe that educating children is a noble and just cause, indeed, probably the most noble.
I'm not the best IT guy I know, but I'm pretty darn good... and I can spell and use proper grammer better than you.
I'm sure someone may have already posted this, but... It's the parents job to educate children, not anybody elses. The public school system is a tool a parent can use to educate their kids, but if the tool is broken, fix it, or use a different one. That is why we home school. My kids can learn as much in 2 hours (and retain it) as publicly educated kids can learn in a day.
The purpose of the public school system is to educate the greatest number of people possible to the highest degree possible. If you have a class of 30, and little Johnny is in the back disrupting the learning process for everybody else, throw him out. Or better, test him to find what his interests are and put him in a trade school so that he can stop being in the way and start contributing.
