In what world do theaters get 50%? I owned a second run theater and was lucky if I got 50%. First run theaters might get 10% the first and second week when a movie makes most of its money. Their take goes up from there.
Thinking like this is what places a stigma on NC-17. NC-17 does not mean a movie is about sex or porn. Most often the violent horror films are originally given an NC-17. NC-17 was created because the original X rating for adult themed movies was never copyrighted and was taken over by the porn industry because they could place an X rating on a movie without going through the MPAA. One of the first X rated films was awarded an Academy Award for best picture. Anyone remember Midnight Cowboy?

I believe it was on the DVD's, or in an interview with Joss Whedon. He explained the western aspect. Earth is no more (I think they said "It got used up") so colonies were created throughout the galaxy, many too far for regular supply routes. Much like the first American colonies they have to rely on what they have available. Some technology, but not much, so they use horses for transportation, build their own homes, etc. Also, I love the theme. If you have the DVD's, find the easter egg of Adam Baldwin singing Jaynes song.
