The common pool of money idea is one I've thought about and seen bandied about semi-seriously, but I've yet to see it seriously discussed. It sounds interesting, and potentially a solution to many of the inherent corruptable flaws in our current system. Does anyone have any links where this idea is discussed? Aside from the obvious "if everyone entered the ring, the pool is nickel and dimed away" issue, why wouldn't this work?

which leads me to my next question: why do wind farms consist of all those huge windmills? wouldn't 100 times as many smaller windmills generate a similar amount of power?

    gah, i was missing it.

one thing, tho, that i don't think a lot of folks think about with full 180/360 degree rotating wheels is the forward momentum.

I build crazy bikes for fun. Tallbikes, backwards steering bikes, monster chopper bikes, long bikes, etc. One idea I had was a bike with dual wheel steering. Of course, if both wheels turn in opposite directions, this would allow for a smaller turning radius. But if they turn in the same direction, taken to their ultimate logical conclusion, you'd end up with a segway, with the bike moving sideways. What happens when you turn both wheels while moving toward a fence? Instead of changing the direction of travel, the bike just changes its orientation in that it's still moving towards the fence, but it's facing sideways...

Of course, with a proper speed limiting doowhatzit, I think it would be fairly trivial to disable the wheels' ability to turn beyond x degrees while moving faster than y mph.

(On a somewhat offtopic side note, I lived in the Mississippi delta for a year a while ago. I was excited when we first moved there to find that there were soybean farms galore. Grain silos full of soybeans. I called a few, asking about buying some soybeans. The smallest amount I could get is what I was after, since these places moved semitruck loads full of the things daily. Me and my measly 250 pounds of soybeans. I was informed (and laughed at a couple of times) that "soybeans--them's for feed!!" and that you couldn't eat them, since they had all kinds of chemicals in them, but that they feed them to the cows, which are then fed to the people...)

In rooms like the kitchen, or the living room, the "on" switches get used more often. in the bathroom, the utility room off the garage, are both excellent places where you would want to be able to turn on the lights without touching the light switch. i know the switches in several houses i've lived in have been super dirty in the rooms where i go to wash my hands...

So beef up the solar panels, and build the roads with them. There doesn't seem to be a shortage of roads. Have it be municipal. Whoever builds the roads gets the power from them. ie city road power goes to cities, interstate road power goes to the fed. Agencies can sell the power or use it or whatever. Private companies could put in private roads (toll roads) and sell the power, but they'd have to buy the tracts of land. Railroads, maybe?
The power could also be used to power the cars/streetlights/crossing signals that follow the roads. Aside from the obvious "they're made from glass" issue, why else wouldn't this work? Concrete's made of sand, too.
