How many modem cards will you need for that? They can only transmit one band at a time, so if you block 1900, all the phones will switch to 1800/900 or possibly 3G at 2100. And don't forget CDMA- 1900/1700(Korea)/800/450(Eastern Europe/Russia?). And for even more fun, throw in some PHS (1900) or PDC (800/1500). Impractical.

Oh, I'll probably be charged about a third of that. China Mobile's big enough to get lower roaming rates for most of the places I go to (one rate for all calls back to China- 75cents US. That, or maybe it has something to do with the fact that they're state-owned ("give us this rate or your customers can't roam on us" or some such thing- but hey, GPRS for me is 1c/KB outside China- no complaints).

Huh, odd. At the school I go to (Shanghai) people talk freely about local politics (the teachers do; the students talk about the nightlife and which clubs are better and dumb crap like that). When I came into the country, I was never searched for books and music.

Sounds like you haven't been to Shanghai then. It's a big city with plenty of Westerners, but you certainly don't see citizens leading normal lives. The beggars practically force themselves upon you. (Oh, and Westerners do see the inside of Chinese prisons sometimes; but those are the real idiots who try dealing crack or some dumb crap like that).

Just did some research online. Apparently, Japan is the most sexless country on earth. So put together a high suicide rate, a workaholic society, and a lack of sex (I once heard that Japan would eventually go extinct if its people don't start having more children) and Brazil probably does seem like paradise in comparison.

Racist? O RLY? The Brazilian students at my school (which is located in China; I do wonder how they got here) are pretty much the most multicultural bunch (the behavior you speak of I see every so often in the Korean students). One's a Japanese immigrant, and the rest are European (not Portugal). Only one has a presence on Orkut, though; the rest are all on Facebook.

Dress like a local and it's important not to stand out (which can be hard for a gringo).

Well, the locals stand out far enough already, so it's not too hard. For example- the last names of three of my Brazilian classmates at my school are Polanczyk, Dattelkremer, and Toyama. To be fair, the last one is a second-generation Japanese immigrant to Brazil, but the point is that with such a variation of "locals" standing out isn't something to really worry about- don't bring enormous bags around outside unless you're going to the airport, and stuff like that.
