'Most big companies will wait at least a year before deploying Vista to make sure the operating system is stable and that third-party applications work well with it, How long did most companies wait before deploying Win XP (or win 2000) after it was released? Is a one year wait 'normal' for IT across companies?
I wonder if this will, in anyway, help stabilise Iraq as it is now. I hope the final report has something on the lines of -"..before we remove a significant fraction of the soldiers from Iraq, we will plan and implement a self-standing, well trained Iraqi police/armed force..".
Arguing about whether it was right for the US to invade Iraq is rather academic now - however, if the US quits now, you can expect it to be spun as a huge victory for radical Islam. It will also destroy what little credibility the US has left.
/optimist: Maybe (unlikely) the US will admit it screwed up, request a UN mandate, and allow an international peace keeping force to step in and help administer Iraq till it can get back on its feet?:/optimist
"Microsoft itself has acknowledged that the Zune investment may take years to bear fruit, and analysts upheld the expectation. "Apple will not feel any bit of discomfort from Zune, certainly this holiday season and a good part of next year, said IDC analyst Danielle Levitas. Microsoft is going to put tons of money in this over time, much like they did with the Xbox' video game console, she said. It's not about the first generation (of devices)."
I think this might end up being true - though whether, even then, Microsoft will turn out to be the ipod killer is hard to say: I'd bet on apple retaining the top spot with a reduced marketshare (and at 72%, it is a pretty high marketshare) and Zune coming in second - backed by heavy marketing..
actually, if I remember correctly, Craig Venter has teamed up with google folks to develop tools for analysing genomes - (Source: The Google Story, by David Vise)
I second that.
I've been browsing this site regularily (2-3 times/day) over the last one year or so, but am not a very active poster/ contributor.
In the past 1 year, I've submitted one story, and that was accepted - so, well, obviously, it works for me.
However, when I did submit that story, it was because I thought others on/. might find it interesting - was not 'aware' of the url bit, and having come to know of it now, I don't think it would influence my future submissions one bit.
If I understand the genesis of/. correctly, it was meant to be a place where people submit interesting links - no profit motives except the hope/reward of seeing a good discussion - I think that is how it ought to be; no need for reward link backs - IMO
However, I think maybe a few rules of engagement need to be specified - it get's irritating everytime a nice article/post degenerates into a MS v/s *Nix or apple rant - perhaps in another post, taco can open the discussion for a set of community enforced and accepted/. etiquette ?/. is a very very nice and useful resource, even with the ocassionally low signal to noise ratios. Keep up the great work!
ah, and yes., more polls:)
cheers
Pehaphs by being more proactive as citizens, and demanding and electing the right set of people to legislate. This, IMO, whould be a permanent solution - we could keep developing ways of evading 'surveillance', but the the agencies would just develop something better - wouldn't they ?
FP, btw:D
"Next Office should be available for Linux (and Solaris and the complete version of OSX and...) "
umm, Next Office is available in a *nix flavour; just that it is a office package being sold by a Chinese company.. (http://www.nextoffice.net/) based on Open Office ( I think)
I suppose 'cause there never will be a 'stable' situation.. either we keep expanding, or expand and contract..or just 'dissipate' away ?
Nothing in nature is stable.., which ofcourse means us scientists will never be out of a job:D
not true actually..the PSLV is powered by a NOX/solid fuel combination ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polar_Satellite_Launc h_Vehicle) while the GSLV is powered by the cryogenic engine.
suggest you also look at http://www.oreillynet.com/mac/blog/2005/11/learn_l isp_from_mitfor_free.html (LISP) and (from the same article) http://mitpress.mit.edu/sicp/full-text/book/book.h tml (Structure and Interpretation of computer programs) - read the introduction and preface. There are also a bunch of supplemental videos that you could use.
Hope this helps.

that could also be the old SGI's rendering their last images..maybe that's why they needed the upgrade!
why has the parent been modded troll ? Why is it trolling, especially when IMO he has a valid point, or atleast a point that can be discussed about?
