I never said I trusted the UN - you're right, they are slow, power-hungry, and not very effective in reality. However, this development could resurrect their previous attempt to assert control over the internet. That is the point that I was getting at; not that the UN would be better, but that this could make them try again.
I can just see the international outcry if the FCC tried this. They hate ICANN as it is, this would just lend more credence to their distrust of our "stewardship" of the net.

Those dialects do receive ridicule (chowdah, da bearz, gah-run-tee, etc.), the difference is that it appears to be more ridicule of particular aspects of the dialect itself as opposed to the people who speak it. As for why that is, I dunno. Maybe it's because "The South" has more of a reputation for doing more backwards things (like the aforementioned incest), for being more aggressive than other parts of the nation (Don't mess with Texas, anyone?), or maybe it's just holier-than-thou snobbery. Regardless, I think it's more a desire to make "racy" humor in a PC climate - jokes about whites are fine, but don't go near another race or suddenly you're a racist bigot, so people are forced to joke about a white "race," in this case, southerners.
So, the entertainment industry should be held accountable for making violent video games? I suppose he also thinks gun manufacturers should be held accountable for making guns, too. God forbid we actually blame the people who committed the crime; let's just blame some industry scapegoat instead.
