well one of the best reasons to text someone i've found is discretion. if someone is at work or you are at work and you don't want to be seen talking on the phone in a meeting or at your desk all day, hammering out a text message is a pretty good way to get what you need to say across without drawing attention to yourself. it's the modern day equivalent of passing a note when the teachers back is turned.
If you aren't sure if someone is busy or not and truely don't want to disturb them then sending a text message and then letting them get back to you at their leisure is often fairly practical.
in a lot of cities there are ordinances that the cops can't chase motorists under various conditions, like over 20mph over the speed limit. It's pretty common actually, the idea being that in high speed chases even more people get injured.
Medical Records are quite often larger than 100k, I just finished setting up a small clinic this weekend, and they scan in medical charts and x-rays for all their patients. It's not uncommon for a single patients records to be 20mb or more. so check your math again with those numbers.
In Atlantic City there are laws in place that casinos CANNOT kick you out simply for counting cards. Typically what they do though when they suspect a counter is they will simply reshuffle the deck after every hand until they leave.

I'm not going to claim to be particularly knowledgeable about this. But is it possible that the code the amd path uses was the original compiler code and the "geniune intel" path was added at a later date as the processors added support for sse?
The original code may be quite old with only minor revisions made and they didn't bother to enable the new code for AMD paths. If by chance this is the case then it doesn't really reflect on them so poorly.
