An entirely legal alternative version of this would be to have the deadman's switch flag the unit as stolen, notify a server regularly of its IP and geolocation (if it can), and redirect all internet requests to show a "Reward if found" screen. (Or, if you're feeling worse and don't want to actually get the computer back, you can filter all the images to be Goatse. Or kittens, I suppose.
My worry is that if he's a strong president on those (good!), he'd also be a strong president on the ideological stances he has which I totally don't agree with as well.
I've read a particularly horrific series of blog posts about what it means to live in a country after an economic/social collapse -- I think it was Brazil or some other South American country. I wish I could find a link to it, maybe someone else can link it. The basic gist was:
- The shit hits the fan. No, seriously. - Someone is always going to be out to kidnap/murder/ransom you, and probably rape your family too. Your home must be a secure compound, and don't leave it lightly. - Be armed at all times, don't talk to strangers. - No, seriously, don't even answer the door. - Have gold and non-currency means of bartering, because any money you have in a bank will be gone - Weapons. Have them ahead of time, as the black market for even shitty weapons will be outside of your means. - Food and water are crucial as well. - You will know someone who disappears, is kidnapped, or murdered. It might be you.
Part of me read it and was thinking, "OK, this is some scary shit. I hope it never happens". The other part of me wanted to curl up and cry, because I am not prepared enough for that. I really, really, really do not want to see a "shit hits the fan" scenario come to pass in our country. It might be good for the long-term health of the country, but I fear I and my family might not be alive to see it.
If you were making bootlegs for crippled orphans, I suspect almost all of us would applaud you too. MORE, even, as I'm pretty sure even the slashdotters who don't see value in respecting the people who serve would see value in easing some miniscule amount of an orphan's suffering.
I wonder what would happen if someone were to roll up to Child's Play with a U-haul full of pirated DVDs.
Why is the parent post marked Troll? It's trolling to say that we should respect the courage and sacrifice of those who are willing to go and die (or get maimed) for us, even if we don't support the reason for them being there?
People join the military for a variety of reasons. All have to ultimately decide that they are willing to go die to defend the nation and the constitution, should the need arise. In the process, they also end up having to go shoot at people our leaders don't like, which is less cool -- but please don't discount that willingness. It's a form of courage.
Long ago, you sat at your first FPS. Your heart raced as you blew things up and spent many sleepless nights beating a game.
I *still* get that feeling when I play some games. Stalker, Modern Warfare 3, Borderlands. I know many gamers pooh-pooh the in favor of more "intellectual" games like roguelikes, but... it's fun. It's a visceral fun. Hell, Borderlands is nearly nothing more than "First Person Diablo with Guns", and somehow I still found it tremendous fun. Don't discount the general appeal of things that appeal to our inner thirteen year old.;)
Minecraft is an anomoly. It satisfies a completely different (and no less satisfying) need.
The addition of auto-raise would defeat the purpose of half of the reasons I love focus follows mouse. Thanks for the warning about its inconvenience with a unified menu, guys.
Many of us have seen, in the past sixteen years, races where the difference between candidate A (winner) and candidate B has been less than a few hundred votes in a given state. When you consider what a SMALL fraction of a state's population that is, it's easy to see why people (especially in states where races are often close) will weigh the value of voting for someone they want versus voting against someone they Do Not Want.
I have noticed black people (in the southern u.s., in general) tend to (genetically) be more socially oriented and more artistic thinkers, less scientific. (Before someone starts fucking arguing: yes, large parts of culture are caused by genetics.).
I think you're mistaking "culturally" and "genetically". People that grow up in the same area, with the same social or money pressures, will often end up behaving or perceiving the world in similar ways -- and poor people (black or otherwise) often do stick together. Hell, look at the history of the Irish immigrants. All of the same bullshit that you're claiming is because they are black are things which people have said about Jews, Irish people, and Italians.
Patience and politeness are skills that have tremendous value when raising children, autistic or not. (Cazekiel, thanks for the comment: it was very informative.)
If they were to choose to enforce it nonuniformly, when it clearly was something that everyone was violating, I expect that some of the people expelled might make a compelling discrimination suit.
Agreed. There's only 10! (3.6 million) ways to connect the dots, max, and even then most people won't use all of them. It increases if you can visit a node twice, but even then that's only like 10^N for N edge endpoints, right? (I'm probably off by one on that...)
Requiring a more detailed login (google login) is a good counter after a few failures, but honestly looking at the smudge pattern on the screen probably would be a HUGE hint. (There are probably even microscopic wear patterns that are more common over your swipe pattern, in fact. I bet it'd be really neat to look at some images of those.)
Wipes after sufficient failures should be an option that can be disabled, though. Anyone with kids who ever get their hands on their phone will likely prefer that. Hell, my son managed to dial emergency services once by mistake, WHILE MY PHONE WAS LOCKED, and I didn't know until they called me back, just by mashing buttons. (Apparently, holding down zero long enough would dial 911, even when locked. Not so cool when you manage to sit on the phone wrong, or the kid decides to hold your locked phone Just Right.)
Exactly. Heck, a "Reward if found" notice could even be for more than the street value of the device (hint hint).

At that point, you may as well get a concealed carry permit as well and use that as your state-issued ID. :)
I think Americans have too much baggage for that to work...

I bet someone has thrown one while skydiving. ;)
It's interpreted in whichever way the person behind the counter feels like understanding it.

Probably the name of his school, or the part of town that he lived in.
your recourse is the due process provision of the IDEA law. You don't need a government agency to fight your battle, you have all the tools.
For those who don't know, can you elaborate on this? In what way would the due process provision of IDEA law be the tool to help her kid?

Perhaps he was just too excited.

For a minute there, I thought it was a Tim Minchin song. (:
Are there guidelines on how to (safely) make a citizen's arrest? I mean, without being beaten soundly and charged with resisting arrest?

I like that it falls back to a stronger authentication, rather than bricking the phone completely.
Android 4's face recognition, plus having to enter a pattern drawn on screen, seems like a great pairing. I am assuming you can use both, of course.
