I'd say that's a little narrow. Some writers, as you mentioned, use science and use it well, writing their stories about how people deal with the changed society. Some write about the society thus changed, without dwelling on the actual science that brought on the change (John Varley, for example).

Nope, there are people who didn't/don't like it. Tastes vary. Kinda ticked you dismiss people who do enjoy it as drooling fanboys while simultaneously complaining that you'll get flamed for expressing an opinion (you can't like Firefly unless you're a drooling fanboy?), but no reason you have to like what I like.
