  1. The media's job is to find two opposing points of view and present them as equals.

    1. You're conflating "journalism" and "media".

    2. Your statement is untrue for either. However, it is a standard recipe for "infotainment".

Let's hear that again, I think some folks might have missed it.

If you still didn't quite get that, allow me to translate: These monopolies intend to re-architect the Internet to suit their profit model, and to prevent others from getting started the way that they did.

Give this AC a cigar. And some upmods.

Were you even born yet when those paperbacks came out? I was 13 or 14, old enough to buy them with money from my paper route (remember those?) and read them.

If I had thought of it (recently) before reading this story, I would have looked it up. But I've wondered about lots of things for periods measured in years, just not all of them concurrently and continuously.

I use trainchinese on both phone and tablet. A touchscreen is perfect for such things, much more natural than trying to trace characters with a mouse or trackpad.

Google Translate is also fantastic for this--if I see a character I don't know, I can whip out my phone, write it on the screen*, and--hey, presto!--I know I'm on Jade River Avenue and not some other River Avenue, and I can pronounce it correctly for my wife, so she can tell the taxi driver where to bring her to meet me. Thank goodness they started making it possible to store the dictionaries offline, so I now can actually use it in China without worrying whether the local authorities have blocked only www.google.com or all of *.google.com.

Bowling games are pretty good on such devices, too.

However, trying to play a scroller-style shoot-'em-up on a touchscreen makes me feel like I'm getting motion sickness after about 3 minutes.

*Random attempts to trace do not work. You must get the strokes and stroke order reasonably correct. But this is actually a good thing.

Our company uses a chip in our employee IDs. I get into our Stockholm office by turning around and banging the scanner with my ass--it's just the right height to read the card in my wallet just fine that way. The fact that the corporate logo is pasted across the front of the card scanner just makes it all the more heartwarming.

We use a separate fob for the outside door (we share the building with several other firms). That works just fine, too, and people seldom if ever come to the office without their house and/or car keys.
