This is why I am saying that the more important underlying problem is that the teaching methods use din our schools are crap. I couldn't get by without the drugs because the school was incapable of using more effective teaching methods that benefit everyone, not just those with ADHD.
I fully believe that I could have excelled in high school without stimulants had the teaching methods been different. Beyond that I don't know. But we know for a fact that some of the ADHD symptoms subside with time as the brain learns to cope. But that requires spending days not being medicated. So even if you still need to be medicated after you graduate high school, the years spent without it will put you further ahead.
I didn't have hyperactivity. I was ADHD-PI. There are different types of ADHD that, in spite of the name, are not associated with hyper activity.
I'm glad I did it though. I wanted to be an engineer since before I started kindergarten. I would be miserable doing anything else. If your kids need the drugs to achieve their life dreams, do them a favor and let them eat the pills.
I can't really speak much to cases that severe. All I can say is that I have never heard of a case that severe without something else going on in addition.
But it's all a moot point because the people who think it's all a load of crap just point the blame at parents and argue that teachers just don't want to deal with kids. As long as no one is pointing the blame at our outdated teaching methods, nothing is going to change and parents who want their kid to have as much opportunity as possible will give them the drugs.
I think all kids to some extent are "ADH". The key is figuring out when it's actually ADHD. This is why the diagnosis criteria seems so dubious and why it is often abused.
Beating kids with ADHD does no good. It just makes them psychotic. You would be better off drowning them in the local river. I grew up in a very rural area. You had a choice between the local public school, a catholic school, and the psychiatric institution. Not bad considering some towns had it worse. Both of my parents worked to make ends meet, so home schooling was not an option. Keep em coming.
I don't know if this is still the case, but I know some schools would get extra government funding for every kind they had that was diagnosed with ADHD, creating a huge incentive for them to push diagnosis.
I can guarantee you this. I would not be an engineer today if I did not have stimulants when I was a kid in elementary school on through high school. By college I needed it less as I started to grow out of it.
The fact is that kids with ADD could do fine without it. However, our schools are run in a manner that is not conducive to teaching people with ADD. So parents have to choose between having a depressed delinquent child who likely will never have the chance to even try to reach their full potential, or drugs.
It seems (anecdotally - stats anyone?) that the incidence is higher in the priesthood than in the general community.
I'm not convinced of this. I believe clinical pedophila is a lot more common that we think. However, for the majority of society, 100% trusted access to children is very limited and social pressures keep them in check. The priesthood lacks these barriers. It's also quite possible that the way in which men are brought into the priesthood unwittingly encourages it by stunting the development of their sexuality.
Requiring drawn CP creators to submit to random inspections (otherwise not getting admitted into the market) should keep the incidence of abusive drawn CP hitting the market low.
That's offensive and fails completely to address the real problem of society being incapable of telling the difference between fantasy and reality.
With a line like this from one of their lawyers "We're creating a revenue stream and monetizing the equivalent of an alternative distribution channel", it sounds like they are setting out to add pirates into their customer base one way or another.
It's all part of the problem with the economy of free. There is a near endless demand for anything that is free. Likely many people who would be otherwise willing to pay downloaded it instead. The whole system is messed up. Piracy is way too easy to stop, and most people don't care about any extras they might get buy buying or renting. And yet, the movie industry has not figured out a new way to exist to deal with this problem. Theater ticket prices are too high to encourage people to take a chance on a movie, and no one runs double features or does second theatrical releases of films anymore. In my mind, the movie industry can only survive this by returning to the theater. If I didn't have to pay $12 to see a mediocre movie, I would go a lot more often. Maybe something like $8 could get me going every other week if they just dedicated one screen to reshowing old classics.
Fair enough, though I would call that scenario somewhere around true neutral or even lawful neutral. You aren't dedicated to doing good or evil. It's all about the what's in it for you.
Because this shit affects your life. The more the government or anyone else knows about you, the more they can use it against you, purposely or accidentally. The government at least here is notorious for using unrelated stupid shit to try and prosecute you for shit you didn't do or just because a cop is having a bad day.
The rich? Wtf are you smoking? Yes California is far from mildly socialist. However, my family is far from rich and ever since I moved to California with my wife, the increase in spending on taxes that I have experienced is staggering. In spite of that, I receive none of these so called socialist benefits aside from unemployment, which pays less than I would have received where I moved in from, and does not pay enough to even pay my basic bills. It is slowing the inevitable if I do not find a job soon. In spite of being laid off twice in one year since I moved here, unemployment is the only program my family is eligible for. I suppose the upside is that with all of the taxes that have been sucked out of me (preventing me from building enough savings to sustain us for an extended period of time) I feel fully entitled to every penny I can suck back out of the government. Don't worry though. I'll be living on the streets before the government ever pays me more than I paid them.
While the police/state have no obligation to protect you from murder, you do have a right to not be murdered. Because if you are murdered, the state has the power within the federal law to murder the person that murdered you in retaliation.
Just like our Cro-Magnon ancestors stole Europe from the Neanderthal? Seriously, at some point you gotta let go of the past. Or should my white ass be considered African American because Cro-Magnon originated in Africa?
If I recall correctly, the Native Americans welcomed us with open arms. The English legally (on their terms) bought land from them. Shit didn't really hit the fan until around the mid 1700s (at least not in Pennsylvania or New York).

The problem with ADHD is that sedatives make them even more hyper or distractible.

Funny thing is that caffeine should do the opposite of making a kid with ADHD bounce off the walls. Not a bad litmus test.

I'm not sure about "open source", but I have heard the GPL called a virus before. I can actually see the argument for that.
M-theory supposedly solves the problem of what was before the big bang.

Suddenly I really like Android.

And you don't have to deal with smegma!

You think Congress doesn't know the truth? They might be crazy, but they're not stupid.

Also, I buy most if my produce at the local farmers market and buy my meat from a butcher. My grain and beans likely come from Mexico
