Ain't it the truth...damn recruiters do try to act like pimps sometimes...and they *never* want to do business by email; they always want to take up your valuable time on the phone...

Yep...my life's goal is to write the kernel for Pimpbot 5000...I can just envision header files like smackaho.h, turnout.h, collectfrombitches.h, polishthecaddy.h, etc.

But seriously, I want to write software that, one day, will all meld into one big piece of code that will do anything...I'll put it in a file called whoisyourdaddy.h or whoisyourdaddy.java and import it into every subsequent piece of code I write. Sort of an API-as-omnipotent-deity pattern...

What is programming but overcoming boredom with brute force?

Actually, there's a neat little SSI-type API for Java on freecode.com that works quite well for this; you just form a link like this:
    <a href="/servlet/ServletName?sesid=&lt!--#echo var="sessionid"--&gt"&gtlink&gt/a&gt
Check out the package (it's GPLed!) at http://www.freecode.com/cgi-bin /viewproduct.pl?8543.

Hate to say it, but if you're dumb enough to open a VBScript or .exe attachment, you deserve to get your hard drive nuked. Curses to Micro$oft for making insecure software.

So, are you saying that Micro$oft did something new & original by stealing the windowing idea from Apple, who stle it from Xerox, who stole it from someone else???

True, unix and its variants first appeared on the scene in the 1960s, but kernel development has been relatively continuous since then, as opposed to the closed source systems, which tend to have major releases every few years, and often try to deprecate and supplant older versions. Those major revs create many, many bugs, which have to be fixed by more major patches & releases, etc... If you do something right the first time, you seldom have to do it over.

Suits are like snake oil salesmen...they add a little dye, some new packaging, call it something new, and try to make you pay more for the same product.

Here's an idea that's bound to generate some controversy: How about an open-source, fully GPL'ed product that serves the same function as CyberPatrol, but fully reveals every site blocked, and a reason for blocking it? I think the open source community could put out a *much* better product than Mattel.

It's not NSI policy at all. Just run a WHOIS and check some combinations. A cursory check reveals that there are domains for ass.com, shit.com, cock.com, etc. The individual registrars set their own policies. I have found several smaller registrars that don't censor at all, and say so in their policy statements.

I believe the registrars should be forced to tell you up front whether they censor or not. I found the fact that register.com won't disclose its policy very disturbing. Corporate censorship is a bigger problem than government censorship these days; look at how the PMRC and other hate mongers have shoe-horned the record industry in years past. We can't allow that to happen on the internet.

  14. Re:Trivialization of Free Speech on Who is the Best Registrar? · · Score: 1

As usual, someone on /. misses the point entirely. If we allow corporations to become the arbiters of our morality, we are essentially giving up on any possibility of having a free & open society. The greatest tyranny typically starts in the most innocuous of places. It may start with a few (agreeably) offensive strings in a URL, but what if they start censoring things like georgewbushisevil.com or stopthechristiancoalition.org? It's just a matter of adding a few lines to their evil text string files/records. Plus, the fact that they won't even *disclose* their policy up front (I went through hell to get it) makes it even more insidious.

It's not that I would ever want to register any of these names; I was trying to determine which text strings they censor. As it turns out, they also censor anything having to do with the olympics as well. What's next; censorship of anything critical of the Christian Right?

  16. CENSORSHIP AT REGISTER.COM on Who is the Best Registrar? · · Score: 3

register.com censors domain names containing certain text strings. I ran a little experiment to test this, and was able to ascertain that they censor after several emails and telephone calls. They won't even tell you you're being censored; you just get a message that says "The domain you have requested is not available." Network Solutions also censors, but at least they tell you when they do so and why.

Do we really want to do business with a company that limits what we can say? I suggest going with a smaller company that doesn't consider itself a guardian of our morality.

J++ has always been an excellent tool for both Windows and general Java development. Having used it extensively, I'm heartened by the fact that Rational is taking it over. Here are a few suggestions for them:
    • Put Servlet support in this puppy.
    • Create server-side debugging, similar to what metamata (http://www.metamata.com) does. The ability to debug from client to server is an answer to all our prayers.
    • Continue to support and develop WFC, because it's sometimes more appropriate than AWT or Swing (both of which are very slow by comparison.)
    • Put full support for the java specs (AWT, Swing, javax, etc) in.
    • Drop the zip compression in favor of jar files. We could all use standardization.
    • Maybe open-source the ide and compiler?
