I dunno why you're all so down on Microsoft. Its a kick arse company with excellent products, visionary leadership and massive amounts of talent.
No Microsoft didn't invent the internet but they did capture and popularise the platform that allows millions of people to access the internet everyday. They made a mistake. They accepted they made a mistake. They changed course and once again ate the competition.
All this nonsense about being "first" is hooey. Theres no good being first if you cant hold onto whatever advantage it supposedly brings.
Linux in comparision is a dog of an operating system as witnessed by its paltry uptake and market share.
Perhaps if the Linux community spent as much time promoting the features and benefits of their so called "superior solutions", as they do bashing Microsoft, then they might actually get in touch with Joe Average consumer and break more than wind when it comes to product mindshare.
The biggest problem with most Linux geeks is that they are so wrapped up in the technology side of the software industry that they seem to have forgotten about the "business" of selling software.
Microsoft does this better than anyone in the software industry. You can all moan and bitch all you like but it's all become little more than a vaguely wimpish sounding cliche'.
Too all those in the Linux community who believe otherwise perhaps a reality check is in order: Microsoft dont owe you diddly squat! Not nil. Not nada.
If you want to kick Microsofts arse then by all means do it. But enough already with the carry-on as if you've already done it. The way some of you puff your hairy chests about the state of the Linux platform, anyone would think it was your camp that had an 85-90% market share. And to that all i can say is....lmao! You've got a lot more work to do than that sonny boy!
Thats a really great idea. Im not going to do it because its neither my field nor am i a direct stakeholder in any of this. But it remains a great idea.
Every dollar i make comes from developing and servicing Microsoft solutions and yet even im glad to see the Ministry of Education moving towards open sourced/standards.
I dont know why every country doesn't invest in a "National OS" programme, especially when so much of the ground work is available as open source Linux. Theres far too many dollars being sucked out of many economies and back to Redmond for my liking.... the biggest problem it seems it getting someone with enough IT nouse into a position with enough power to be able to make a change.
Does every desktop of every government employee really need Word? It would be cheaper to send them all on a 1/2 day course about HTML and then give them notepad, a default CSS. Just exactly how much is Microsfot milking the public purse for features that are simply never used nor required?
The point is that when the backbone does get up to speed Finnish citizens will be able to take advantage of it "immediately". The more countries that adopt this level of bandwidth the more incentive there is for backbone providers to roll out higher bandwidth networks and/or services.
And while the rest of us are screwing about with DSL and cable the Fins have at their doorsteps a living high bandwidth laboratory that they can use to invent and innovate new products and services.
Theres always some downtime between our adoption of new technologies and when we really begin to harness their powers. And in this case, the Finns and the Japs are well ahead of the rest of us in adoption. If their smart and creative enough this should give them the edge in product and service development that takes advantage of those networks thus bumping up their GNP.
'Cept of course the japanese only know how to copy and refine so i dont think they'll do much until the rest of us have them what to do.:)
Either way as things stand if this were a race, and dont think its not, the Fins would currently Finnish First!
