You know, the snark has got to stop. It sounds witty, but there's nothing behind it and it still manages to pass for insightful commentary.

The fact is that people go to work to make money. They aren't going to quit or not work in government because they want smaller government. Why? Because they've got to work somewhere, and if there's a gov't position open, someone's going to take it anyway. Refusing to take it on principle only hurts the prospective employee, and does NOTHING to constrain the size of government.

What needs to happen is the strategic elimination of high-level groups and programs. That absolutely cannot be done by Joe the IT Worker or Sally the Secretary, and their decision to take that paycheck while its available is totally reasonable.

There aren't many people who complain about local taxes. Know why?

    1. The people who set them are much more accessible and more easily voted out of office. Waste and excess is generally much lower at the local level as a result.

    2. The budgets are more transparent at local levels.

    3. The people see a direct result of their local tax dollars. What is the result of my federal taxes besides wars and a bunch of blowhards in DC figuring out how to muck around in places they don't belong?

The Federal government is obscenely bloated. Much of what it does needs to be pushed down to the State and local governments. Until that happens, we'll continue to have these circus elections, hot-blooded fights about every topic under the sun, and will continue to look like a bunch of asses to the rest of the world.

Besides, most orgs I've been in (big ones) start off with something like RHEL, but then customize it so heavily that it's barely recognizable anyway. Morgan Stanley even put together their own distro called Aurora Linux, though I think it might be defunct now. I haven't worked there in several years, but they had one hell of an environment -- based loosely on Red Hat if I remember -- but so heavily "Morganized" that it was effectively a new distribution by the time they were done with it.

I've got other things to concentrate on besides server administration -- like coding my project management and billing system, or working for my clients so I have something to bill them for. Ubuntu makes that easy for me.

I've recently vetted Slackware, Debian (stable), and Ubuntu Server 7.04, and settled on the latter because it strikes the balance I need between stability and up to date software. You may legitimately disagree with my choice, but I have my reasons and I'm sure you have yours. Most Linuxes make great servers, so it's really choosing your favorite incarnation of "awesome."

These guys absolutely, positively are NOT joking. They're as serious, and their message every bit as pointed as any network media propaganda out there. That they do it under the cover of "comedy" in order to provide the "it's all in good fun" and "we tease everyone" defenses is cowardly and sickening.

That they'll tease Obama lightheartedly or in some inconsequential way and then tear McCain apart is absolutely not "teasing everyone" equally.

I used to enjoy those shows before the election season, but as November gets closer, they're not even trying to be funny anymore. Everyone can take a ribbing, but what these guys are doing is a lot more than that.

Of course, it's within their rights to have an opinion and talk about it on their shows, but they absolutely do not have the shield of "all in good fun" when they do so.

You go talk to EnterpriseDB, who've been working on Oracle compatibility for Postgres. I can't speak for it personally, but you might be able to get away with the cost of a conversion project to a similar database (read: close, but not equal). At that point, it's pure savings.

Oracle has features PG doesn't have, sure, but ask yourself: how many of them are you actually using? Of the one's you're using, can they be done differently -- maybe by tying in a different FOSS project or home-growing a solution? If you "think outside the box" a little, I think you'll find that those features are generally nice to have, but not really worth the million bucks a year you're paying to have them, and by applying different solutions, you probably won't lose much functionality anyway.

Is that true for everyone, no. I'm sure someone will tell me about their absolutely necessary Oracle-only feature that they're using, but the fact is that there are lots of projects on Oracle could have used MySQL and not lost anything.
