My point was just that jlcooke shouldn't worry about his ethanol freezing at -20C.. (as long as it's pure ethanol, but I have no idea what the ethanol used as car fuel might be mixed with)

You have a good point, but I think there is one big difference:
This guy is just going to be sent there (as a passenger)... The "I'm better than all those who have died trying to do this before" way to think doesn't work in this case... If he dies you probably can't say that it was his own fault... (it's of course not sure it'd be anyones fault!) I think that's a way many of the people who are going to climb mount everest think...
(btw, from what I've read the way up to the peak of mount everest is full of corpses, but that doesn't seem to matter to the ones who are climbing the mountain - so they must be thinking something like that) --- Tip: Sick and tired of these tips? Well... Who'd choose slink for new Debian installs?
All new Debian installs I've done (just a few, but anyway) have been potato, and I haven't had any problems with that.
I've never tried upgrading slink->potato... so I can't comment what you say on upgrading to potato... And well... would it be a problem to actually download the 2.4 kernel yourself? I've never understood the people complaining about the kernel a distro is shipped with (and some people changing distros just because the one they use came with kernel version x.y.z and now this other distro has kernel x.y.z+1!!), as long as the utilities the distro comes with are recent you won't have a problem changing kernels...
...This message was written on a slick, elegant and up to date Debian box with THIS YEARs hardware (and with support for every tiny bit of it!)...
But yes, you do have a point when you say that Debian's stable version is well stable but old...

Well... First of all, I don't think you're supposed to pronounce GNU 'Gee en you'... neither does good old FOLDOC think so...

I don't say I always do that, sometimes I just say Linux (but I always pronounce it "lee'nuhks").. but what I want to say is that you're making it harder to say than it actually is!

Talking about navigation pages, brevity does rule. Users need to be able to get an overview of their choices without having to scroll too much. Ideally without having to scroll at all. If you need to scroll while making the choice of where to go next, then you are forced to keep promising options in short-term memory after they scroll out of view. The Slashdot audience may not fully appreciate the problem of having to keep items in short-term memory since you only become a programmer if you are good at doing this. Most people are not. All users will furthermore suffer from the tendency to select among the visible choices: if something looks like a good answer and as the best answer, then users will often follow that link without scrolling down to see if there might be an even better link on the invisible part of the page.
This is when I use "open link in new window" on pretty much every link that looks interesting (this works great, especially if you're on a slow link and the pages take some time to load)... --- Tip: Sick and tired of these tips? "ARRR-EMMM DASH-ARRR-EFFF STAR" ("rm -rf *") would imho be more useful than removing a file named rf in the current dir and then every file in the current dir (recursively)
so remember... every time you enter a room full of geeks with voice operated PDA's shout "ARRR-EMMM DASH-ARRR-EFFF SLASH-STAR" amd they'll all panic and run away...;)

Slash v0.9 Released

Right!
(I'm no expert, so correct me if I'm wrong) but the main purpose of Slashdot is not to develop the Slash code for all the geeks out there, but rather to be a good news site for geeks (and maybe others too)... right?
At least I see it this way: Giving the Slash code away too is just a bonus, so people should stop bitching about delayed releases and all that crap!
As a consumer, *I* think I'm paying for the content. *They*, the people selling it to me, think I'm paying for a license to watch it, and forget about it forever after until I want to pay for it again. If I can tape shows off of TV, I should be able to do this.
Uh... but you're not allowed to tape shows off TV and redistribute them either! Which means that by the same logic you used you're not allowed to do this...
Really? So ethanol is a solid until -114C?
Yup... -114C is pretty darn cold anyway...

Probably it'd cost just as much (If this is possible with a SR-71 anyway), and then they probably wouldn't let you in without a huge bribe ;)

I use VIM (Vi IMproved) a lot... and I don't recognize your problems at all... maybe you should try VIM?
If you like Vi I think it could be worth it... gvim is also available if you want a GTK version...

If you get that domain you'll have your site permanently slashdotted!

This has gotten way too silly. Postings in binary, otoh...
Which leads to the question:
What do you mean by "postings in binary"?
Isn't everything here really posted in binary?

If truth #2 really is aimed at Sun's hardware then how can they possibly compare Sun's hardware to their operating systems???????
Well, I guess in Micros~1 FUD anything is possible...
The problem is that if these people really trust Micros~1 they will believe in FUD like this and think that Windows is better than anything else...

I think that in general Matrox cards are nice and generally robust...
And if the price is critical the older Matrox cards should by now be really cheap and it sounds like they might be adequate to your needs...
It may of course be hard to find any stores that still have those...
For example:
Matrox Mystique 220 does 1600x1200x24bpp
Matrox Millennium II does 1920x1080x24bpp
Even though these cards are old their 2D performance may be good enough...
But I guess you should check out the cards in action before you decide...
