that virtualising i386 was hard and carried quite some overhead.

Not in the slightest. When you emulate a different architecture, sure, that takes a significant overhead having to translate the machine instructions. But virtualisation runs the existing machine instructions more directly on the hardware, which can run at near-native speeds.

Some of the latest hardware from Intel (the Vanderpool technology : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanderpool) is even able to do virtualisation at the hardware level directly.

We are looking very seriously at replacing several servers with this virtualisation technology using VMWare ESX and VMotion. It should prove to save on hardware costs and running costs in terms of power and air conditioning, not to mention the flexibility you have! I'm sure other folks who have used this technology will be able to tell more about that.

Also, you can check out the Wikipedia comparison of virtual machine technology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_virtua l_machines) - it is amazing how many of those technologies run guest OSs at native or near native speeds!

Slashdot/Slashcode needs some feature to show that a comment is a reply to another comment below your browsing threshold. Perhaps just show these posts as children of 'A reply beneath your current threshold'?

In this case, the grandparent was replying to a (currenly 0 score) anonymous post talking about K-Meleon, not Opera... and the non-appearance of that post changes the context completely.

Just out of interest... have you tried uninstalling/removing any Firefox extensions you have?

I guess it is just possible that some extension could be causing problems like this, especially if you have several that could conflicts.

I guess this is why Opera aren't planning on introducing something like extensions, for the concern that they could affect the stability of the browser.

That said, I can't actually see where it says that anyone is excluded on the basis of geographical location...

This is correct! The main page says:

Who can participate? Individuals and groups over 18 years of age are eligible to participate in this contest except where this contest is prohibited by law. Please see the Official Rules for complete details. So far we have validated that the contest and its rules are legal in the United States, Canada (excluding Quebec), and the European Union.

In other words, you may participate as long as this contest is legal under your country's laws. We know that the rules are legal in the US, Canada (but we do not know the legality of Quebec), and the EU. If you live in a country other than these, you must confirm whether the rules are legal where you live, and if so you may enter the contest!

The rules exactly say (under section 14, Litigation):

These official rules will be void where any provision thereof would be found invalid by a court of competent jurisdiction. If you are a resident of such a jurisdiction, you may not participate in the Contest.

Again, residents from other countries than those listed may be eligible to enter, depending on the legality of the rules in your country. I'm no lawyer, but I haven't seen anything in the rules that should make the contest illegal in any moderate country.

The article summary therefore is completely wrong as those outside the US, the EU, or Canada, or those in Quebec, are most certainly not ineligible to enter.

Excuse me for being born on a different continent, but what are "demerit points?"

It's something like... anti-karma... get enough of them and you're banned (aka, a -1 starting score).

Until he/she has a tyre blowout, or comes across an unexpected pothole in the road, or has to swerve to avoid a rabbit running across the road... at which point that extra 30mph or 50kmph could make a huge difference to the ensuing damage to the person and other people, not to mention their car. Those are things that can happen to anyone, no matter how good a driver they are.
