  1. Re:I made billions- but you'll be replaced on Bill Gates Speaks Out Against Immigration Policies · · Score: 1

Most business schools today define a firm's goal as being to maximize wealth for its shareholders, and maximize benefits to its stakeholders, which includes customers & the community in which the firm operates.

The world is flat - in reality hiring cheap does not mean hiring a lack of quality. India & China have top quality people who don't have the chance to enjoy our standard of living. Does that mean they are less deserving of a job than we are? What happened to competition. I'm sorry if Americans are losing jobs but to say that they inherently deserve them more than qualified Indians or Chinese is ethnocentric & racist.

At least those who fall into the first category can choose whether to get their partisan bs from Fox or CNN. I don't like the current situation of dumb@ss Americans being shepherded by Rupert Murdoch and Ted Turner but I am absolutely petrified when I think of them being directly fed information by the military-industrial complex that so many of our own American heroes have warned us against. On the other hand the top armed forces brass doesn't seem to happy with the current administrations policies in Iraq so who knows what the pentagon will put out right now? How ironic would it be if this program was actually an attempt to notify the public of just how bad the Iraq war is and how global warming is a serious threat to our national security.

I know I have thought about this a lot - I live in Arizona where energy bills are sky high and the sun is always out. Some of the power plants around here have a few solar panels but I always wonder why there isn't more of a movement toward "backyard" solar in some of the sunnier states around the U.S. I sometimes think a big obstacle is that power companies have a lot of the technology and don't want to distribute it because obviously power companies in Arizona would be in trouble if everyone had solar panels....

I personally think this is one of the most obvious abuses of power our president has dared commit. He has officially stated that he is the supreme, and untouchable leader of the United States and above all reproach. I am sorry, but I though America was voting for a president in 2004, not a Pharaoh.

Science should definately influence politics, if we find out there is a killer virus that is about to wipe out humanity it is certainly our governments duty to do everything in their power to prevent it. Equally, if we find out that global warming is likely to ravage our climate we should adjust our policies accordingly to prepare, and if possible prevent this. However, Politics should NOT influence science. Scientists should never be impeded by partisan influences, nor should they have to worry about losing their jobs over giving the "wrong" results, aka results the administration does not want to hear.

  11. Huge breakthrough on New Nano Desalinization Method · · Score: 1

This could be one of the most important discoveries in history. Most of the world right now is facing water shortages. In some areas, such as the Middle East, nations fight wars over water. If we could actually implement techonology to make the world's oceans drinkable just think of the problems we would solve. Right now around 70% of Africa does not have access to clean water. The Sahara is expanding because African nations are trying to do too much with too little water and the soil is blowing away. Just imagining the possibilities of this technology is giving me tingles. I just hope that the companies that use this try to deliver at the cheapest possible cost.

Wouldn't this probably have something to do with the Anti-trust rulings against MS, I'm sure it could be ruled as unfair to pre-package all operating systems with Anti-Virus in place. This would obviously have a negative impact on software companies like Symantec.

  14. What is wrong with America today... on Hacker Gary McKinnon Interviewed · · Score: 1

America is a country that was founded on the premise that if the government is not doing its job, it is the DUTY of the people to rise up and do something about it. Armed rebellion is not only impractical and unnecessary, but won't solve anything. What will solve a lot of problems is information. This man thought information existed that was being injustly kept from the public so he took matters into his own hands in his quest for the truth. I agree that you can't just go around giving access to military files, but this guy isn't a terrorist...I guess I have a personal interest in this because I agree with him that we do posess a lot of technology that could revolutionize our world and choose not to release it. Whether the reason for this is money, security, power or whatever, it does not go with the principals our country was founded on. Regardless of whether he was trying to do right or wrong, the fact that our legal system is considering sentencing him to prison for 70 years (for viewing unsecured files!!!) seems like a way to shut him up about what he saw to me.
