There have been no true virus that I have heard of, although the media reports anything and everything as a virus. There was a trojan horse, but I do not consider stupid users to be an OS vulnerability. To install anything on OSX requires you must enter your admin password, unlike XP which will install anything with no warning at all. What more can Apple do? This whole thing reeks of carefully planned and released FUD against an OS that has evolved far beyond its competition and is gaining in favorability.
"When you remember that ~94% of O/S usage is Windows, and ~96% is PC in general, With the remaining ~4% being primarily MacOS usage, you will realize that 40 vs. 71989 doesn't really seem as remarkable."
4% of 71989 would be 2879 virus for the Mac. So at 40 OSX IS REMARKABLE.
While MS chases after a market already owned by Apple, Jobs and company are moving on into the video realm. Next week Apple will unveil a new Mac Mini media center that like the iPod is easy to set up and use. And just like the iPod knocked out the other mp3 players out there with its combination of simplicity, elegance, and service, so too the Mac Media PC will knock out the the poor media center effort by MS. That is what should happen anyway. I hope Apple delivers.
The fossil record provides overwhelming evidence of the the great tre of life Darwin described. Pick up a science book. To say there is no evidence of Darwinism is nothing other than total willfull ignorance.
Market forces are diven by supply and demand, but digital goods have unlimited supply and so are completely unaffected by demand.
In fact, I would think that for digital goods demand actually should have the opposite effect of normal market forces. As demand (sales) rises, the cost drops, and so should the price. If this is true then popular music should cost LESS than less popular music.
I think Jobs is right on that the music industry are greedy bastards looking to gouge consumers like they always have. That said, Steve is looking only to sell high margin iPods, and just as guilty on that point.
In any case, I wonder if anyone else agrees with my hypothesis that demand should decrease the price.
It took a little getting used to when I switched from Windows to Mac but now I prefer Apple's one button mouse. It is more comfortable in my hand and instead of clicking with your finger I can just push the whole mouse down with my hand. I find this creates less carpal strain (and pain). As a side note, my Apple wireless mouse gets 2 to 3 months life on regular batteries.
Different stroke for different folks. I have friends who swear by trackballs but I find they cause me intense wrist pain. Kudos to Apple for creating a mouse that accomodate itself to the user and not the other way around. That is the purpose of technology isn't it?
Who decides what is "grossly immoral"? You, the government? Immorality (sin) is personal between you and your god(s). Crime is a social violation that harms others. The acts of consenting adults are not crimes.
I work on and own both PC's and Mac's. A real price comparison of machines with similiar capabilities shows that Macs are no more expensive. The 299 dell is cheaper than any Mac because Apple doesn't make a machine that low end. You do get what you pay for.
Compare these:
Dell Dimension 3000
Pentium 4/winxppro/512mb/40gb/cdrw-dvd/no monitor/integrated audio/firewire/no speakers/usb keyboard & mouse/no wifi/no bluetooth = $687.00
Mac Mini
ppc 1.25/osx tiger/512mb/40gb/cdrw-dvd/no monitor/integrated audio/firewire/no speakers/usb keyboard & mouse/no wifi/no bluetooth = $557.00
Gee wiz, the Mac is over $100 cheaper! So you can get a cheaper PC, but apples to apples (ugh) the Mac is actually less expensive.
A few notes. having used G4,P4, and Celeron you must compare the G4 to the P4. The Celeron D is a pig I would not wish on anyone. I have a G4 1.5 and it performs equal to my P4 2.8HT. I also included xp Pro to compare to OSX. XP home is not the equal of OSX (frankly, neither is XP Pro but it comes closer).
