Of course, if you were living in china (which i suppose you aren't) the tanks would probably be censored out and be replaced with pictures of the google ceo and the emperor of china holding hands
Never, ever, underestimate the idea of a corrupted government. Nowadays, the government (US government, at least) is mostly controlled by big corperations and the RIAA/MPAA. All they would have to do is to make it illegal to make computers that don't have this DRM "functionality" and feed the public some crap about it stopping software pirates. Now, I would like to see this open hardware as much as you would, but this is probably never going to happen.
I actually read TFA, and picked up some thoughts along the way...
The very nature of e-mail (which, along with first cousins IM and text messaging, is an undeniably handy means of chatting) encourages sloppy "penmanship," as it were. Its speed and informality sing a siren song of incompetent communication, a virtual hooker beckoning to the drunken sailor as he staggers along the wharf.
Well, exactly. *Informality* is the key here. Most of you wouldn't use "LOL" in an email to a boss or professor, you might say "I find that very amusing" instead. On the other hand, you might use "LOL", "IMHO", and other "slang" when emailing or chatting to a friend. That doesn't mean one understands you more than the other. It's just how you choose to talk with different groups. This doesn't mean it's "devolving" or anything. about 70-60 or so years ago, the word "neat" meant "tidy". While the use of the word changed to become "interesting". Nobody understands anybody any less. People still talk the same face to face with each other as they did in the past 100 years (AFAIK, LOL;)
"Among the housing ads cited as objectionable by the Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law Inc. were ones that read "NO MINORITIES," "Requirements: Clean Godly Christian Male," and "Only Muslims apply.""
It seems reasonable to me to want roomates of the same religion. I wouldn't want to share a room with an 8 year old, a muslim wouldn't want to share a room with a catholic. I found on the craigslist website http://www.craigslist.org/about/fair.housing.html:
"... or were ads containing incidental and harmless remarks such as "near St Gertrude's church." Some of the challenged ads simply celebrated the diversity and tolerance of the craigslist community... Others sought to appeal to some groups without excluding anyone... And for a few it is difficult to determine what protected classification is at issue..."
Do lawyers/judges have no common sense? Are they just greedy? It reminds me of the criminal who sued because he got bit by a dog in the process of breaking and entering someone else's property... And WON... Or the guy who got sued by FedEX because he posted pictures of his furniture that was made from FedEX boxes. FedEx lawyers claimed violation of, amoung other things, the DMCA. How stupid. The fair housing laws were made primarily to ensure that non-white people (so called minorities) would be able to live in the same areas as white people (ever see the play "Raisin in the Sun"?). This is stretching it way to far..
"Without good software and an owner who understands programming, a hobby computer is wasted." Thanks to everyone's favorite operating system, now almost every computer in stores have no good software and will be used by people who don't understand programming. "Will quality software be written for the hobby market?" Not by Microsoft, that's for sure (well, there's a few good microsoft programs, but they stopped selling and supporting them long ago when they found out they could sell crappy software and still make millions). A nice guy called Stallman wrote/write's quality software, though. Maybe go ask him for some.
For all of you dual booting people, try this:
$cat ftp.exe|grep california
You should get the "Copyright blah-blah regents of the universty of california, berkley" or something similar, I can't quite remember
