Stupidity...
Stupidity is having lots of guns in the community, especially when it is so violent like the USA!
Compare the USA with Switzerland for percentage of guns.
Stupidity is electing a president that insists Global Warming isn't real.
Stupidity is insisting Evolution isn't real because it conflicts with your brand of superstition.
In general, stupidity is ignoring Reality (based on evidence & logic) in favour of Dogma.
So you say. I'm pretty sure Kale is actually an Indian goddess with too many arms and serious anger management issues.
The purported vegetable that some people call kale is actually a failed US government attempt to develop a packing material so flavorless and devoid of nutiritive value that even bacteria can't (or don't want to) attack it.
My earlier post was boosted to a 5 score, I think your post deserves at least a 5.
Consider an aircraft carrying 200 people heading over the ocean towards a major city, that develops a severe engine fault.
Say the AI has 2 choices: (1) Crash plane into sea and kill all on board (2) attempt to land at city's airport
AI calculates 80% probability of aircraft landing on runway safely, and 5% probability of crashing in city. If plane crashes in city, it estimates 500 people killed on the ground.
expected deaths of option 1, is 200 expected deaths of option 2, is 0.2*200 + 0.05*500 = 40 + 25 = 65
Therefore AI decides to attempt to land plane at airport.
Note that this assumes that the estimate of probabilities and that the number of deaths on the ground are reliable. For simplicity, am ignoring injuries and economic losses.
The choice is between the certainty of killing 100 people, and the possibility of almost a thousand people dying!
The Zeroth Law of Robotics, was added later, but non-the-less quite crucial for safe use of AI.
Looking at the laws that use the word 'harm', take a moment to try and define what it means to harm a human being - not so simple is it? Now try and encode that in an AI, way more difficult.
How would you think Christian Fundamentalist, or a Radical Islamist would define 'harm' - they differ from each other. Okay, now assume a totally rational human being, how would they define 'harm'? The last question is a bit unfair, as totally rational human beings don't exist!
Imagine an AI set up to maximise profit for shareholders of a Pharmaceutical company, it might be very effective. However, they may be nothing to prevent it from doing something that would wipe out mankind. Release a drug that cures something quite common, build in to it a facility to modify DNA to ensure children crave the drug during adolescence & ensure they can't reproduce if they don't get it. What could go wrong? After all, the production facilities in the USA will always exist, and everyone can buy the drug cheap, right???
Was there ever a market for this? It's always the same two Linux enthusiasts who are vocally adamant about there being a market for games on Linux, but who are we really kidding here? Games on Linux is a cute niche, sure, but it is a niche nonetheless. [...]
If I bought any games, they would be for Linux.
Linux runs on more devices than all other O/S's combined.
We have two Linux desktops and a Linux laptop.
My son has his own Linux laptop for his University studies.
So why would I want games that only play on Microsoft boxen???
It wasn't quite live. There is obviously a long enough delay inserted that they were able to shut down the feed before the world saw the main rocket crash. I wouldn't call that part catastrophic. I don't intend to rain on the parade, because all in all this is a brilliant achievement, but losing the main vehicle isn't the small blip that SpaceX said it was either. Two of the three engines failed. That's significant in and of itself. Losing the main vehicle because of that isn't a minor event. Still, it represents mission success, which is the main thing. And it's nice to see something outside of government with that kind of heavy lift ability.
Hmm... As on previous occasions, the vibrations travelling through the air just before the Falcon lands, disrupts the transmission by affecting the aerial. However, this time, the Falcon hit hard.
Android and Chrome books should be counted as part of the Linux percentage - which would probably put Linux at over 30%. As otherwise Linux would not show up, but would show up only via percentages of Desktop Environments like KDE & Mate.
Also Linux dominates servers and embedded devices.
So overall, Linux is on more things than all other O/S's combined!
I've been using Linux as my main, or only, O/S for over twenty years and I've never needed to compile a kernel.
I have the freedom to do things more the way I want than on alternative O/S's - Microsoft & Apple O/S's are very restrictive in how you can configure your Desktop Environment - I use the Mate D/E, I could download and install a totally different D/E without having to reboot my computer. I can use up to 35 virtual desktops('workspaces', according to some), also I can have multiple tabs on my directory windows and terminals -- without having to install additional software.
Not having to run anti-virus products is wonderful.
Well now well see just how good my AV is..I didn't patch im on win 7 ultimate upgrade from Vista full. It would be a HUGE PITA to recover lol but i refuse to go win 10. im not paying for an OS that forces ads on me or controls what i choose to install on MY hardware..you get the point...
Wtf? Is it global warming or climate change? It's so freaking cold here in Florida I wonder where they're taking temperature readings, maybe in their rectums? Boiling over the scam hasn't taken effect? Remember the coming ice age in the 1970's? All scare tactics no solutions just send more money!
Global Warming leads to more extreme weather conditions. This means while the mean temperature of the planet increases, some parts will get a lot hotter and other parts a lot colder.
I've added emphasis in the quotes
https://www.livescience.com/37... [...] Extreme weather is another effect of global warming. While experiencing some of the hottest summers on record, much of the United States has also been experiencing colder-than-normal winters.
Changes in climate can cause the polar jet stream — the boundary between the cold North Pole air and the warm equatorial air — to migrate south, bringing with it cold, Arctic air. This is why some states can have a sudden cold snap or colder-than-normal winter, even during the long-term trend of global warming, Werne explained. [...]
https://www.ucsusa.org/global-... [...] Factors that come into play for regional weather (and indeed global weather) are Earth’s seasons, ocean patterns, upper winds, Arctic sea ice, and the shifting shape of the jet stream (see below). "Global Warming Will Kill Us All." Is probably a lot more likely than most climate scientists would like it to be - as unfortunately, the most accurate Climate Models tend to be the most pessimistic (I would love to be wrong in this)!
https://www.technologyreview.c... "Global warming’s worst-case projections look increasingly likely, according to a new study that tested the predictive power of climate models against observations of how the atmosphere is actually behaving.
The paper, published on Wednesday in Nature, found that global temperatures could rise nearly 5 C by the end of the century under the the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s steepest prediction for greenhouse-gas concentrations. That’s 15 percent hotter than the previous estimate. "
Even the mildest predictions of Global Warming show increased threats to American security and economy - yet Trump claims that security and economy are more important than dealing with Global Warming:
http://www.latimes.com/world/e... "The Trump administration will stay focused on economic growth and national security no matter the outcome of its climate change policy review, a U.S. official told delegates at a United Nations convention in Germany on Saturday.
http://www.syfy.com/syfywire/s... "Navy Rear Admiral (retired) David Titley has stated very clearly that it's a threat to U.S. national security, and President Obama went as far, correctly, as to say that climate change denial is a threat to our security as well. Interestingly, current Secretary of Defense James Mattis — one of the very few people in Trump's administration who understands that climate change is real — has called it a threat to national security as well."
Yeah, we may survive - but necessarily in ways we would like.
In a hundred years there may be up to 10,000 humans in a precarious existence in scattered bands around the planet, with the oceans practically devoid of life...
I believe you're thinking of the U-2, which was shot down twice. On 1 May, 1960, over the Soviet Union, and 14 October, 1062, over Cuba.
No SR-71s were ever lost to enemy fire, although they were certainly shot at. The North Vietnamese shot over 800 missiles at it, without scoring a hit.
They had actually only just engaged the Hyperdrive when the missile hit. So the hit was last century, but the plane came down in 1062.
The US base on Cuba is mostly there to guard the top secret archaeological site where it had crashed.

Put primates into space!
Perhaps we are guilty of being humanist???
Phrases like a hundred times smaller and a hundred times thinner are implicitly implying division.
a hundred times bigger means multiply by 100
a hundred times smaller means divide by 100
Put people into space!
Never specify gender, unless it is appropriate!
All mass, without any exceptions bend light, not just very large masses.
However, we don't normally notice these effects unless the mass is very large.
At very tiny scales, like single protons, quantum and other effects dominate -- but the tiny mass does effect light.
I suspect that masses greater than that of Jupiter are required, before we can easily notice a mass bending light. Here I'd love to be wrong!

Probably unfair to blame everything on Trump...
Even scarier than Trump, is the number of people who still support him.
Pity Elizabeth Warren wasn't a candidate. She was probably too incisive, focussed on reality, and ethical, to be a viable Presidential candidate!!!

Linux is obviously a lot more secure - however, get someone competent to set up security.
Using Microsoft, is essentially saying that you don't take security really seriously.
Very relevant, just think how much more money companies can earn selling you extra allowance!
Remember than companies are more important than mere consumers...
