  1. Re:Motorola at LW on Motorola to purchase Metrowerks · · Score: 1
Motorola Computing was at Linux World in San Jose. So maybe it's a good thing for Linux.

This has nothing to do with that. All the groups and divisions in Motorola are almost like seperate companies. MCG is doing good stuff with Linux.. but they don't affect what SPS (which is much much bigger, BTW) does at all.. and vice versa.

All that said, Motorola now has a mandate from the CEO that all of the divisions have to start getting along better so it isn't too far fetched that MCG might contact (and might have already contacted) SPS to establish some synergy, here.

The group I work for is ANTI-Linux, BTW...

Everything above is my opinion and I could be wrong with all of it

It appears that there is a Linux project to work with the 802.11 standard. Here is the abstract
The goal of the Linux WLAN project is to develop a complete, standards based, wireless LAN system using the GNU/Linux operating system. What differentiates this project from the Linux wireless extensions and other Linux wireless projects is that we're basing everything on the recently approved IEEE 802.11 standard.

Frankly speaking, it doesn't matter. Certain individuals have made it clear in this thread and in many others that they have no intention of co-operating. Again, it doesn't matter.

As you can see from this thread, there *are* developers from both sides that are more than willing to co-operate. That's what it takes -- people that will do the actual work. If there is a clear consensus that co-operation and shared protocols are a Good Thing *AND* there is code to back that up, then those who stand in the way will simply get overruled or swept aside.

It's in the best interest of both users and developers from both sides to go this route. Recalcitrant individuals can do nothing more than slow the process down...

  4. Re:Perhaps Panel Compatibility Later On? on KDE & GNOME Cooperate · · Score: 2

I'm told that this will happen. Matthias Ettrich (kwm author and KDE founder) is supposedly working with several sombodies at creating a standard "applet" protocol. When that happens, I'll have those mods in KBiff within a day or so.

For the record, I was going to put direct GNOME panel support into kbiff but didn't for two reasons:

    1) I couldn't get the gnome system working until *very* recently
    2) As soon as I got it working, I heard of the common applet collaboration and decided not to waste my time on code that would be thrown away in a few months.

Qt and GTK themes are not compatible and probably never will be.

HOWEVER, KDE and GTK themes will be able to get along just fine! What do I mean? Well, we've essentially abstracted the themeing layer a bit higher than the Qt level. Thanks to the incredible work by KDE developer Mosfet, all theme work can be done at an "rc-file" level. Soon, there will be a easy to use GUI to do all of this in a point-and-click manner.

Mosfet is also now starting to integrate GTK themes into this. I believe he is having troubles finding the official GTK theme specification (I looked for it myself with no luck -- I'm sure it's out there somewhere but it is sure not easy to find). Once this is done, it should be possible to use GTK themes in KDE *AND* to apply KDE themes to your GTK apps.

It is a given that somebody will also code the "other" direction. I would be very suprised if you would not be able to use KDE themes within GNOME someday.

Heh. There is something to be said for getting away from the computer and listening to the radio, watching TV, reading the paper, etc. Had you done any of the above in the past year, you would have been swamped by the USWest DSL ads (the "Mega*" services). There are also quite a few ISPs for the DSL if you don't feel like going 100% USWorst.

That said, getting DSL with USWest is often easier said than done. I couldn't get it at my first apartment since I was "too far" from the switch. I can't get it at my (new) house since the wire is fiber-optic right to the house and DSL only works on copper (so far). *sigh*

    > Don't forget, Harmony is adding the other thing that Qt (and thus, KDE) lacks, real (widget-level) theme support

That's old. Qt 2.0 has great support for widget-level styles (or themes.. whatever). KDE 2.0 will have "plug-n-play" widget styling.

Just for kicks, I did a screenshot with my KBiff app with Qt 2.0. This is what it looks like with a MacOS (Platinum) theme:
