  1. Re:Free on Gates: Hardware, Not Software, Will Be Free · · Score: 1

Microsoft has increased its prices with each new release. I presume their reasoning is that there aare more features. I would rather have a slimmer OS without a bundle of "features" I don't use. Take out Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Microsoft Messenger, Outlook, MSN Explorer, Online Services and let me pick. Most of the holes and vulnerabilities come from these "features".

Microsoft XP Pro $299, Apple Panther $129, SuSE Linix 9.1 Professional $89 (or free) and my favorite x86 OS BeOS $69 (before it died) Price being NO indication of quality. I predict that Longhorn will have a MSRP of $499.

I have almost completed changing all my accounts from uswest.net to qwest.net. Now I'm being sold up the Sound to Redmond. Someone please give me a break. Any suggestion on ISP's that support DSL? My Netscape probably won't work as well with MSN and AOL is definetely not an option. Soon it will be like the Model T, you can have it in any color you want as long as it is AOL or MSN.

  4. Copyright Revision on Lawrence Lessig On Hollywood's Attack On Fair Use · · Score: 1

I think that to be just we should give copyright holders their due, however they in turn must recognize our rights to "fair use". Digital media does allow for abuse of copyrighted material, but this is a teo edged sword. Digital material is ethereal as anyone who has had ahard drive crash or accidentally erased a file will know. I is essential to be permitted to have backup copies. Others have enumerated the needs of students and educators. Users of digital material must have the same right as users of hardcopy material.

The problem with EULAs is that they are a one sided contract. Most retailer will not accept returns of open software, so if you read the EULA and disagree you are hosed (either out the money for software you will not use or agree to a EULA you don't really agree with). I think most people regard EULAs as just one more screen you must click thru to get to you program. Perhaps we need a Twelve Step group. First step: Admit that you are powerless over EULAs.
