    If that's true, that universal simultaneity is false, then it should have no effect on us catching up to them. Not to mention I don't believe in coinicidences, there must be a reason ALL 14 of them are hiding behind quasars?

    Those who stay on risk receiving pay cheques which will not cash.
    While it's entirely possible that some employees resigned because they feared of not getting paid, it's more likely that proactive employees have been 'on the hunt' for a better job for many months, and left when their 'ship came in'. These events often coincide with a company 'lettting go' a few of the less valuable employees, in the process of downsizing.

    Ok, if I stop expecting people to drop Windows, could I ask them to stop sueing the Windows they don't want to drop?

    Ok, if I continue my efforts to make GNUs more user friendly, could I ask article writers to not proclaim that GNU/Linux isn't even good enough to be considered an option. (I'm very sensitive)

    I agree with each of your observations, but what conclusion are you trying to propose? That I should stop expecting people to drop Windows (and choose GNU/Linux) because they're too stupid and lazy?

    If free software projects don't get that $690,000,000 then all I see is a bunch of lawyers getting rich, and citizens getting zip.

    Ouch, is GNU/Linux really so bad that it can't even be considered an option? Well, if all this new funding from Microsoft's bank account, along with all of Microsoft's sourcecode can't fix Linux, then what else could we make Bill Gates do?

    The AC appears to be complaining about the daily story selections, and not neccessary regular posters like you and I. To be fair, there are only 14 authors total, and they decide what goes on the front page.

    While I consider Slashdot worthy enough to read and post to, I wouldn't recommend believing in your portrayal of an unbiased and fair democracy either.

    Regardless of whether a computer downloaded or served certain files, they did NOT "detect an individual" at all! What they detected was an IP. If your sister or cousin or the neighbor had theoretical access to your computer at the time (and it only has to be theoretical), then then cannot pin this on an individual, so they have no case.
    While I agree that detecting an IP address isn't proof that someone is responsible, isn't it enough suspision to obtain a warrant to search any computers on that address, and can't it count as circumstantial evidence in court.

    This seems really odd to me, as the article doesn't mention any actionable reason, only that prices have gone up here and there. They're going to need documents, emails, whistle-blowers, recorded conversations, or something tangible in order to prove there's an active colusion going on.

    Any technology which allows the end-user to produce their own media (and some which didn't) has scared the entertainment industry.
    After reading your list of different media types, and how bussinesses had to adapt over the years in order to survive, it seems reasonable to expect the same thing to happen with our current situation. But I'm not so sure, because the stakes are higher for bussinesses, and consumers are more empowered than ever to do what they want.

    What happened?
    -The RIAA claimed that simply making copyright material available online,
    was proof of intention to commit copyright infringement (We got proof!)
    -Defense Lawyers challenged that claim as insufficient evidence (No you don't!)
    -A Judge agreed with the Defense Lawyers (Ya, that isn't enough proof, begone RIAA!)
    -RIAA returns, but drops the 'making available' argument (Is this better?)

    What could happen now?
    -The RIAA would stop bringing cases based solely upon the 'making availble' argument (If it wasn't for those darn Slashdoters)

    Did you miss the "/ducks" tag or are you just a parinoid patriot?
    The post was long and convoluted, and no one would benefit from a point-by-point breakdown of it. So I choose the greatest point, which was that you clearly hadn't read the article, and suggested that one should base their conclusions upon facts and reality, and not the other way around.

    I see that you still haven't read the artcle, but are content to continue proclaiming your innate knowledge of Americas magical guilt, so tell me again, who's paranoid.

    It works like the "war on terror", the US makes a mess overseas so it doesn't have to clean up at home.
    Are you seriously going to tell me you didn't read the article? That Chernobyl was due to greedy Americans consuming so much energy? That any of the coal, metal, or chemical manufacturing plants were equally unsafe and intentionally destructive to the enviroment because America made them do it?

    I personally look at facts and reality, and then I come to a conclusion. You appear to conclude that America is responsible for everything, and then twist any reality or new fact to fit.

    First bubble to break, Apple and Microsoft are not competitors. Unless Vista fails to do what people buy it to do, and that something is something Apple can do, but GNU/Linux can't do, then and only then would Apple see another sale.

    All of the GNU/Linux distributions may be confusing, but they honestly offer different strengths and weaknesses, so don't expect there to be a single Unified_Linux_Sans_RMS any time soon. People and bussinesses pay money for goods & services that they value, but Apple and Microsoft simply don't have the overlap, a real enough overlap, for Jobs to cry about at any Lost-Opportunity cost here.

    The NYT article is simply a torchbearer, a torchbearer in search of a leader, the leader they thought they had. That's not a slam at Jobs, he is leading his own path, the NYT is just a noisy backseat driver. Are we there yet? Have we crushed the richest man in the world yet? Have we turned the world into one big Cool-Hippie-Beatles-Peace-Free-Drugs-Woodstock world yet?

    AFAIK p2p is the current solution to efficient video distribution. I think they are really trying to accomplish something else here, which is why the current solution won't do.

    For instance, if you want to distribute that World of Warcraft patch, then make a torrent and post it to a tracker, done. If you're really paranoid then host it on your own tracker. No, because what they really want is to have an service running on your machine 24/7, so they can... I don't know, but whatever is I'm pretty sure I won't like it.

    Actually, I'm kind of wondering why there isn't any marks in the US. Are we supposed to be the polluters of the world? Is there a mistake that the US is clean enough not to be on the list?
    Actually, the USA is in many of the top 10 spots, funding and working toward cleaning them up, with help from the UK and Japan. But you're right, the media propaganda often shows America is the worst with all their CarbonDioxide and DihydrogenMonoxide while 7 of the top 10 real polluters are Soviet/Russia and China.

    To find out if the Slashdot crowd honestly cares about the enviroment, or are simply hypocritcal AlGore elitists, just watch how this thread gets moderated.

    Correct, it does not. Cycles of warming and cooling independant of man's actions are in evidence.
    It seems like everyone is saying the same words, but meaning different things. So to clarify 'independant of man's actions' would be Non-Anthroprogenic Global Warming, and not Al-Gore Global Warming, right?
